Presented in association with GALSI (Gender and the Large Shiny Instruments), we welcome Laura Impallomeni and her quintet to the Elgar Room.

Laura Impallomeni brings the trombone to the fore, with an exciting evening of exhilarating music. She plays in a plethora of diverse projects, from swing to jive, reggae, afro beat and Latin music, as well as various experimental music projects.

She recently took part in the Sophisticated Giants event, celebrating the work of Melba Liston and has been named ‘one to watch’ by award-winning legend, Maxine Gordon.

Laura Impallomeni studied Jazz Trombone at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, where she studied improvisation and composition under world class musicians and passed with distinction.  During her studies there, she regularly performed in venues such as Ronnie Scott’s with Mark Lockheart’s Contemporary Big Band, and various other smaller jazz ensembles. She went on to receive the Develop Your Creative Practice Grant’ from the Arts Council England, to compose a body of work featuring trombone as the lead instrument.

She is the musical director, composer and trombonist of an original 11-piece afro jazz band called Yamäya. She has just released their debut album Senegal on Funkiwala records, and have been performing it in various venues such as Ronnie Scott’s in London, and festivals such as the renowned Love Supreme jazz festival in Sussex.

Laura has performed and toured with various renowned artists such as First Aid Kit, The Dualer, Giffords Circus, Janet Kay and Ken Boothe. She is currently working as the trombonist in Rumble In the Jungle, a London-based immersive theatre production about the world famous boxing match between Muhammed Ali and George Foreman that took place in Zaire, in 1974.
