Today we celebrate the first Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz's Godspell, which opened on this day in 2011.

Godspell's Telly Leung recently had an impromptu solo performance during a tour of a chapel in Florence, Italy. In this video, the Broadway star sings the fitting hymn 'Joyful, Joyful,' a capella, accompanied by the lovely accoustics of the church.

Los Angeles's exciting live, music performance space Rockwell: Table & Stage just welcomed Broadway & TV's Telly Leung (Broadway's GODSPELL, GLEE, RENT, WICKED) performing an electrifying evening of songs and personal anecdotes. Special guest performers at the one-night only show included Broadway & Television's Kate Reinders (ABC's WORK IT, Lifetime's SHERRI, WICKED). Today in 2011, Godspell opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it ran for 264 performances. Godspell is a musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since.The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables, based on the Gospel of Matthew (though three of the parables featured are recorded only in the Gospel of Luke). These are then interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ treated briefly near the end of the performance.

Second Stage Theatre will present the world premiere musical, DOGFIGHT. Previews begin June 27 in anticipation of a July 16 opening. The cast features Nick Blaemire (Godspell), Annaleigh Ashford (Rent, Wicked, Legally Blonde), Becca Ayers (The Addams Family, Avenue Q), Steven Booth (Glory Days), Dierdre Friel (Leap of Faith), Adam Halpin (Glory Days), F. The show immediately became a sold-out phenomenon and was recently selected by Time Magazine as one of the year's Top 5 Musicals.

The New Broadway Cast Recording of the revival of GODSPELL is being released digitally today, December 20, 2011 on Ghostlight Records. Produced by Stephen Schwartz, Michael Holland and Kurt Deutsch with Executive Producer Ken Davenport, the CD will be available in stores on Tuesday, January 31, 2012. On Thursday, July 7, open call auditions for the first-ever Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz's landmark rock musical GODSPELL took place at The Actors Chapel in midtown Manhattan. Telsey + Company, the casting office for GODSPELL, is seeking musical theatre performers with strong singing voices and comedic ability, ages 16-30. All ethnicities and types were welcome. Thousands of hopefuls showed up for their chance to participate in the historic revival.
