Ailey National Tour Celebrates A Decade Of Robert Battle's Leadership And 50th Anniversary Of Alvin Ailey's CRY
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, America's beloved cultural ambassador to the world, returns to stages on a coast-to-coast National Tour starting January 28 in Philadelphia, kicking off Black History Month at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. on February 1 , and traveling to cities like Atlanta, Miami, Berkeley, Boston, Chicago, and Los Angeles before the finale in Newark on May 8.

Tune into the newest episode of the Auditorium Theatre's #AudTalk video podcast tonight, May 13, at 6PM to hear a conversation between Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Robert Battle and Auditorium Theatre CEO Rich Regan as they discuss Ailey's history, its connection to the Auditorium Theatre, and more. Battle is the only the third artistic director to lead the Ailey company in its more than 60-year history, following Alvin Ailey himself and Judith Jamison. He has expanded the Ailey repertoire with a diverse array of works, and his choreographed pieces continue to connect profoundly with audiences.

Last night, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's holiday season at New York City Center kicked off with an Opening Night Gala Benefit. The one-night-only benefit performance and party honored BNY Mellon for its major support of the Ailey Organization since 2007, and Agnes & Gerald Hassell accepted on the institution's behalf. Film star Chadwick Boseman and actress and Grammy-Award winning artist Brandy served as Honorary Chairs, and the event's co-chairs were Simin Allison, Kathryn & Kenneth Chenault, Debra L. Lee, Doris & Gilbert Meister, Daria L. & Eric J. Wallach and Joan & Sandy Weill. $2.5 million was raised in support of the creation of new works, scholarships to The Ailey School, and Ailey's extensive educational programs for young people.

The launch of MY STORY, MY DANCE: Robert Battle's Journey to Alvin Ailey, the moving children's picture book from Simon & Schuster, was celebrated at The Ailey Studios on October 29th through reading, dancing and discussion. Artistic Director Robert Battle was joined by author and illustrator couple Lesa Cline-Ransomeand James E. Ransome, who spoke about their personal connection to Ailey and their special roles in creating this heart-warming picture book biography. Mr. Battle recounted how seeing Revelations for the first time as a boy in Miami set him on a path to achieve his goals. "Having experienced first-hand the transformative power of the Ailey legacy, I'm honored by the creation of this book based upon my life," stated Battle, "It's so meaningful to know that this moving story will inspire the next generation of students to dream big and reach high." Students from The Ailey School listened intently when Mr. Battle read from the book and beamed as they brought to life an excerpt from Alvin Ailey's masterpiece. The students asked questions and soaked up Mr. Battle's wise and witty advice to stay focused, keep dreaming and dancing diligently, and to remember that if a boy with leg braces can grow up to be a dancer and choreographer, then they can accomplish anything. MY STORY, MY DANCE: Robert Battle's Journey to Alvin Ailey is the inspiring story of a boy who, despite physical and personal challenges, has a life filled with music, church, and movement - first martial arts, and then, after seeing Alvin Ailey's Revelations, dance. This picture book biography features images brimming with vibrant color and swirling motion, and is illustrated and written by award-winning husband-and-wife team James E. Ransome and Lesa Cline-Ransome. Created for ages 5 - 10, the book will be released on October 27th by Paula Wiseman Books, a division of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, just in time for holiday gift-giving.
Robert Spano To Lead World Premiere Of Alvin Singleton Work
Music Director Robert Spano will lead the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the world premiere of Different River - a new work composed by Alvin Singleton and commissioned by Mr. Spano and the Orchestra - May 10, 11, and 12, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. Guest pianist Leon Bates will join the Orchestra for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, and the program will also include Copland's Symphony No. 3, which is most famous for its finale that quotes the Fanfare for the Common Man.
