Original Broadway and off-Broadway cast member Arnie Burton just departed the two-time Tony Award winning hilarious hit comedy 39 STEPS following his 1,000th performance as Man #2/Clown #2 last night, September 28th. Having originated the role in the original Broadway production, Burton returned for the current engagement at the Union Square Theatre. Cameron Pow (The Lion King) will join the cast on Wednesday, September 30th, taking over for Burton.

Gil Morgenstern's Reflections Series International Presents 'Beauty Born of Terror' November 21
On Thursday, November 21 at 7:30pm, violinist and artistic director Gil Morgenstern will present the second concert of his acclaimed Reflections Series International 2013-2014 Season at Avenues: The World School (259 Tenth Ave.). The program is titled "Beauty Born of Terror" and will explore the endurance of hope and spirituality amid the cataclysmic horrors of the twentieth century through music, literature and projected imagery. Of the subject Morgenstern explains, "No one chooses the place, the time, or the circumstances of his or her birth; notes and words have even less choice. Yet one of the ironic facts of creative life is that inspiration often emerges from terror, fear and pain."

By the third act of Martha Gellhorn and Virginia Cowles' 1946 romantic comedy, Love Goes To Press, one of the play's leading characters, a female war correspondent considered tops in her field, begins discussing marriage with the handsome soldier who has captured her heart. When the stuffy British Major speaks romantically of how his love will, naturally, give up her career and go to Yorkshire to stay with his mother until they get married, the 2012 audience members around me, naturally, smirked and guffawed at the absurdity of his antiquated assumptions.

Though I try to avoid pronouncing century-old plays as being as relevant today they were a hundred years ago, a little tweaking here and there - perhaps the mentioning of a critically acclaimed musical that fails at the box office while another that suffers from horrible pre-opening word of mouth nevertheless enjoys a healthy advance sale - would make Arnold Bennett's 1909 media satire, What The Public Wants, feel as though it were written last night.
