Photo Flash: THE KID THING Celebrates Opening Night


Chicago Dramatists and About Face Theatre are proud to co-produce the world premiere of THE KID THING by Chicago Dramatists Resident Playwright and About Face Theatre Artistic Associate Sarah Gubbins. Directed by Joanie Schultz, THE KID THING will preview September 1st, open September 9th and 10th and run through October 16th at Chicago Dramatists, 1105 W. Chicago Ave. Recently, the Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, has named THE KID THING as one of 19 theatre recipients of the second round of The Edgerton Foundation New American Play Awards for 2011. The prestigious grant will fund the extension of the development and rehearsal period of the new play.

Non-Equity Jeff Awards Nominations Announced


The Jeff Awards have announced 105 nominations in 24 categories for Non-Equity Jeff Awards, which honor excellence in Chicago theatres not under a union contract, for productions that opened between April 1, 2009, and March 31, 2010. The Jeff Awards judged the opening nights of 116 productions offered by 55 non-Equity producing organizations and recommended 51 shows for further judging, making those 51 eligible for Non-Equity Jeff Award nominations in all categories.

Strawdog Announces Late Night Fall 2008 Schedule


Strawdog Theatre Company kicks off their 21st season with Karel Čapek's science fiction drama R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), directed by Strawdog Artistic Associate Shade Murray. Set in the 1920s at the island factory of Rossum's Universal Robots, 'R.U.R.' follows a team of scientists who have created the model to factory-produce the world's first robotic workforce.

Strawdog Theatre Company continues Late Night offerings into their 21st anniversary season, with free or low-cost shows following Friday and Saturday performances of 'R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots).' The Friday offering is called 'Strawdog Welcomes,' and features guest artists and companies to present various entertainment acts.

Strawdog Theatre Company kicks off their 21st season with Karel Čapek's science fiction drama 'R.U.R. (Rossum's Universa Robots),' directed by Strawdog Artistic Associate Shade Murray. Set in the 1920s at the island factory of Rossum's Universal Robots, 'R.U.R.' follows a team of scientists who have created the model to factory-produce the world's first robotic workforce. When an idealistic young woman arrives on a quest to free the 'souls' of the robots (and discovers there is no such thing), she manipulates the scientists to biologically remedy that fact. Soon after these 'improved' and extremely humanlike robots have been shipped all over the world, the inevitable robot revolution explodes, leaving questions about the survival of humanity and what actually makes a human.
