Opera Philadelphia has announced plans to bring music to live audiences this spring with three outdoor performances of a concert adaptation of Puccini’s Tosca. Superficially, Wolfgang Mozart's THE MAGIC FLUTE (or DIE ZAUBERFLOTE for you purists) and David Hertzberg's THE WAKE WORLD couldn't seem less alike and, taken together, they stretch the definition of what makes an opera. Yet, as part of Opera Philadelphia's daring new O17 opera festival, they have a surprising amount in common including spectacular scores that demand to be heard again and again.

The last of the new operas at the center of Opera Philadelphia's O17 opera fest is THE WAKE WORLD, a chamber piece written by composer/librettist David Hertzberg and directed by RB Schlather. It opens on Monday September 18 at the Barnes collection--the great museum in central Philadelphia--and promises a one-of-a-kind experience for those savvy enough to snare a ticket. (Its five performances are sold out.)

But more important for composer Missy Mazzoli and librettist Royce Vavrek, the question is “What film didn't win the Golden Globe in 1997?” The answer (for them, at least) is Lars von Trier's BREAKING THE WAVES, which they've transformed into an opera of the same name, premiering at Opera Philadelphia, September 22.

FINDING DORY, the long-awaited follow-up to the unbelievably beloved 2003 film FINDING NEMO, follows Dory, a good-natured, amnesiac blue tang fish (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres), as she searches for her long lost parents.

Board Chairman Daniel K. Meyer, M.D. announced today that Opera Philadelphia's Board of Directors has extended David B. Devan's contract as the company's General Director and President, and Corrado Rovaris's contract as the Jack Mulroney Music Director, through the end of the 2019-2020 Season.
