TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 51st season with the hit musical Ragtime. This sweeping and stirring musical masterpiece paints a portrait of America at the dawn of the twentieth century, interweaving the lives of three families—an African American family, a Jewish Immigrant family, and a wealthy white family—finding their places and pursuing the American Dream in a rapidly changing world. Featuring a Tony Award-winning book by Pulitzer Prize finalist Terrence McNally (Master Class, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Rink) and a Tony Award-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Once on This Island, Anastasia, Seussical The Musical), this musical is based on E. L. Doctorow’s best-selling novel of the same name. Ragtime will be presented June 1-26, 2022 (press opening: June 4) at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. Beginning performances tomorrow, November 1, Tony Award nominee Sheryl Lee Ralph will assume the role of Madame Morrible in the Broadway production of WICKED.

BROADWAY GYPSY TEA DANCE recently gathered at the rooftop bar Top of the Strand at the Strand Hotel (33 West 37th Street) to celebrate Chita Rivera's 2015 Tony Award nomination, enlisting dancers from most of Broadway's shows. Those represented included The King & I, Aladdin, Kinky Boots, Something Rotten, Wicked, American in Paris, The Lion King and gypsies who danced with Rivera in her last Broadway show A Dancer's Life. On Monday, June 30, the Broadway at Birdland concert series presented multi-Grammy and Tony nominated composer Frank Wildhorn in his regular series called 'Frank & Friends.' This particular show, 'Girls Night Out!' found Frank onstage with Broadway leading ladies Jackie Burns (If/Then), Teal Wicks (Wicked), Adrienne Warren (Bring It On) and jazz vocalist Jane Monheit (Jane Monheit's Jazz Party at Birdland). The 15th and grand finale edition of THE BROADWAY BEARS, the annual auction of handmade, one-of-a-kind, theatrically costumed teddy bears, raised a record-setting $198,300 on Sunday, benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Broadway lovers and teddy bear collectors came together yesterday, March 18 at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill (237 West 42nd Street) for one last time to bid on - and bid adieu to - museum-quality bears representing legendary theatrical characters and autographed by the stars who made those characters famous. The cumulative fundraising total for the 15 editions of THE BROADWAY BEARS auctions is a remarkable $2,048,427. The previous fund-raising record was $170,000 set in 2002.

The Musical, the unauthorized parody of The Silence of the Lambs, with book by Hunter Bell ([title of show]), music & lyrics by Jon and Al Kaplan, and direction & choreography by Christopher Gattelli (South Pacific, Newsies) currently stars David Garrison ("Married With Children," Wicked, Titanic) as Dr. Hannibal Lecter and Jenn Harris (Modern Orthodox) as Clarice Starling. The cast also includes Stephen Bienskie (The Last Session) as the notorious Buffalo Bill, Lucia Spina (Legally Blonde) as Catherine Martin, Deidre Goodwin (Chicago) as Ardelia Mapp. And Callan Bergmann (Lucky Guy), Pamela Bob (People Like Us), Harry Bouvy (Spamalot), Ashlee Dupre (Where's Charley?), Howard Kaye (Mamma Mia!), Topher Nuccio (Little Shop of Horrors), and Doug Trapp (Saratoga Trunk Songs).

The Broadway at Birdland concert series last night featured the American concert debut of Dutch performer Willemijn Verkaik, best known to theater lovers for originating the role of Elphaba in the German production of Wicked. Anthony Hollock, Mr. Hair, was crowned Mr. Broadway 2009 at the 3rd annual Broadway Beauty Pageant held Monday evening at Symphony Space. The popular event is the annual benefit of New York's Ali Forney Center, which provides shelter for homeless LGBT youth in New York City.
