The Past And Future Of Black Theater: National Black Theatre Celebrates Founder's Month 2020

Harlem's historic National Black Theatre (NBT) is hosting an annual salute to its founder and CEO emerita, the late Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, with NBT's Founder's Month, a month-long celebration of Teer, Black theater and community. Running through July 18, the celebration will feature the launch of NBT@Home: A Letter to the Future, a new series of online conversations on theater, current events and Black history with guests including Toshi Reagon, Ebony Noelle Golden, adrienne maree brown, Jonathan McCrory, Sade Lythcott, members of the theater's original company of a?oeLiberators,a?? and more, and the launch of NBT's VISION Forward Fund Campaign, a fundraising drive to support and advance the theater well into the future.

A live-streamed memorial service for Lee Kenneth Richardson will be held Sunday, June 14 at 4:00 p.m. (EST). Richardson, who passed away May 24 of natural causes, was a man of many artistic and theatrical talents.

Crossroads Theatre Company Will Present FREEDOM RIDER

Come to Crossroads Theatre Company to 'get on the bus' and experience the perilous history-making journey of the Freedom Riders, black and white college students who traveled through the South by bus to challenge the non-enforcement of federal law that ruled segregation on public buses unconstitutional. The Freedom Riders drew national attention to their cause because of the violence pointed against them as they traveled from state to state. The play Freedom Rider, written by Murray Horwitz, Nathan Louis Jackson, Kathleen McGhee-Anderson, Ricardo Khan, and Nikkole Salter, runs April 9 through April 19 in the Arthur Laurents Theatre of the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC).

Crossroads Theatre Company's Genesis Festival of Plays is back for a three-day run of three new works that stand true to the theatre's history of telling stories that highlight issues and start conversations across ethnic, racial and cultural spectrums, Crossroads announced today.  The Genesis Festival, which will run February 21-23, is a playwright laboratory experience that consists of three separate shows of stage readings for the audience to enjoy and critique that will be held in the performance studio of The New Brunswick Performing Arts Center (NBPAC).

The United States Artists (USA) announced today that dancer/ choreographer Dianne McIntyre is one of fifty recipients of their 2020 USA Fellow award. Each of the fifty recipients will receive a $50,000 cash award of unrestricted funds.

Casting Set for Dominique Morisseau's PIPELINE at Studio Theatre

Casting is set for Studio Theatre's production of Pipeline, playwright Dominique Morisseau's searing drama about the school-to-prison pipeline and a mother desperately trying to keep her son from becoming ensnared in it. The production runs January 15-February 16, 2020 and is directed by Awoye Timpo. Starring are DC theatre favorite Justin Weaks (Studio's Curve of Departure) as high school student Omari and Andrea Harris Smith making her Studio debut as his mother, public school teacher Nya. In its recent People Issue, Washington City Paper's called Weaks a 'standout,' going on to say: 'D.C. theater audiences love Justin Weaks. ...Weaks came to D.C. for a job about four years ago, not expecting to stay. But he kept getting cast in shows, and lucky for local theatergoers, he's still here.'
