The Vineyard Theatre will celebrate the songs of Dory Previn - the late pop/folk singer-songwriter whose numerous hits include "Come SaturdayMorning" and the theme from "Valley of the Dolls" - at its annual Gala Fundraiser on Monday, February 24th beginning at 6:30pm at the Edison Ballroom (240 W. 47 St in Manhattan), it has been announced by Douglas Aibel, Vineyard Theatre's Artistic Director and Sarah Stern, Co-Artistic Director. The Vineyard Gala will not only celebrate Ms. Previn's witty, heartbreaking and provocative songs, but will feature selections from her poems, plays and memoirs, as well.

PBS' new performance documentary A RAISIN IN THE SUN REVISITED: THE RAISIN CYCLE AT CENTER STAGE explores the history and legacy of Lorraine Hansberry's groundbreaking 1959 play through the lens of a culturally significant milestone: the staging of two contemporary, issues-oriented plays that Raisin inspired: Bruce Norris's Tony Award-winning Clybourne Park and Beneatha's Place by Kwame Kwei-Armah, artistic director of the State Theater of Maryland, Baltimore's Center Stage. Jason Robert Brown's Off-Broadway show The Last Five Years takes the stage at Crossroads Theatre Company, April 12-29.
The Last Five Years is a contemporary musical about the five-year relationship between two young New Yorkers: Jamie Wellerstein, a Jewish novelist whose career is rising at lightning speed, and Cathy Hiatt, an actress with integrity struggling to make it in a cut-throat business. The couple earnestly navigates the tumultuous waters of love, while their career successes and hardships tear them apart. Crossroads' production casts Cathy as an African-American, adding an interracial dimension to the show.

Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble, Inc. (MCCE) has been awarded its second prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Challenge America Grant. MCCE will celebrate this good fortune with Congressman Michael Grimm, Council Member Debi Rose and Deputy Borough President Ed Burke on Monday, April 16th at 10am at a formal announcement and press conference at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal (Staten Island side). Live performances will greet morning commuters from 9am to 11am with MCCE members Tamara Keshecki (flute), Clarice Jensen (cello) and Lucille Corwin (viola) performing music by Telemann, Vivaldi, Roussel and Andrew Rosciszewski, MCCE's 2011-12 composer-in-residence.

Composer/Lyricist Dory Previn Dies at 86

Dory Previn Shannon died on Tuesday morning, February 14, at her home in Massachusetts, according to her husband, artist Joby Baker. She was 86 years old.
