Theater for the New City is presenting its 23rd annual Lower East Side Festival of the Arts, a massive annual performance marathon in and around the theater, May 25-27.

In honor of Joseph Papp's extraordinary contributions to the City of New York and the East Village, the intersection of Lafayette Street and Astor Place has been co-named Joseph Papp Way. FABnyc is pleased to announce our first residency program available to NYC based artists to develop their work on East 4th Street in the Lower East Side from January 1 March 31, 2018. The Residency is intended for one artist or collective, preferably with a strong connection to the LES. The residency should include at least one public engagement element. The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) announced today that in honor of Joseph Papp's extraordinary contributions to the City of New York and the East Village, the intersection of Lafayette Street and Astor Place has been co-named Joseph Papp Way. The Public, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its landmark home at 425 Lafayette Street, will host the naming ceremony celebrating the distinguished honor on Friday, December 1 at 8:30 a.m. at the Astor Place Plaza and is open to the public. The ceremony will include remarks by Oskar Eustis, Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs Tom Finkelpearl, District 2 City Councilwoman Rosie Mendez, and Public Theater Board Member Gail Papp, who will unveil the commemorative sign.

On Monday, July 20, 2015, there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the Bea Arthur Residence, an 18-bed residence for homeless LGBT youth operated by the Ali Forney Center. In 2012 the New York City Council and the Manhattan Borough President awarded $3,300,000 for the renovation of a long vacant building owned by the New York City Department of Housing and Preservation Development. The building has now been turned over to the Ali Forney Center in partnership with Cooper Square Committee, and renovations are beginning this month. It is anticipated that the building will begin to provide housing by the end of 2016. 

The two-time Tony Award-winning actress Tammy Grimes (PRIVATE LIVES, THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN) and composer David Amram (scores for the films SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS and THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE) were just honored at Theater for the New City's 12th annual LOVE 'N COURAGE evening. An annual event that benefits TNC's Emerging Playwrights Program, this year's LOVE 'N COURAGE event was hosted by Phoebe Legere and Matt Morillo and featured performances by Ms. Grimes, Mr. Amram, Vinie Burrows, Judy Gorman, Yip Harburg Foundation's Rainbow Troupe, Luba Mason, Human Kinetics Movement Arts, and The Love Show, along with select excerpts from plays by Andrea Fulton, Georges Bizet, Daniel Catan and Seymour Barab.

This weekend, New Yorkers celebrated the 19th annual MulchFest by recycling their Christmas trees at over 80 locations across the city. NYC Parks, partnering with the Department of Sanitation, GreeNYC, and numerous community organizations, provides New Yorkers with the opportunity to act sustainably and mulch their Christmas trees into wood chips that will be used to nourish parks and gardens throughout the city. Participants were also invited to take a free bag of mulch home. This year's MulchFest recycled nearly 30,000 trees.

La MaMa just honored award-winning Olympia Dukakis for her creative achievement in the arts and her work as an activist for social change; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom partner Dan Kurtz for his steadfast advocacy on behalf of nonprofit organizations at the La MaMa Earth Gala last night, November 13th. Guests included Austin Pendleton (who will toast Olympia), John Patrick Shanley, Matt Dillon, among others.

City Parks Foundation has just recently launched the 2014 season of SummerStage, New York's largest free performing arts festival, bringing over 100 free performances to fourteen parks throughout the five boroughs. With performances ranging from American pop, Latin and World music to dance, comedy and theater, SummerStage fills a vital niche in New York City's summer arts festival landscape.Since its inception twenty-nine years ago, more than six million people from New York City and around the world have enjoyed SummerStage. The festival runs from June 3rd until August 24th.
