In its 114 year life the Dutch Treat Club has had a membership that included, Jimmy Cagney, George S. Kaufman, Walter Cronkite, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein ll, and Presidents Hoover, Eisenhower, Truman, and Ford. The great Broadway producer George Abbot was a member for 52 years when he died at the age of 107. But enough about the past. This year this historic New York City institution which was founded by and for creative people decided to honor someone young, creative and contemporary, so they chose...Marilyn Maye…an artist for every generation.

Earlier this month at The Harvard Club, the New Yorker editor David Remnick was feted by The Dutch Treat Club. Remnick received the club's Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. Scroll down for photos!

Since 1905 the Dutch Treat Club a social club of writers, artists, illustrators, publishers, and performers have had the rich, famous, and talented appear at their Tuesday Luncheons. Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammersteinll, Walter Cronkite, Jose Ferrer, Lowell Thomas Edward R. Murrow, and quite a few of U.S. Presidents have been members. This Tuesday the club met at The Players Club in Gramercy Square to hear a talk by The New York Times Columnist Gail Collins and American Songbook Standards sung by Richard Malavet. Ray Errol Fox president of the club greeted the members and introduced Ms. Collins, and Karen Oberlin introduced Mr. Malavet.

Dino's Backstage and The Celebrity Room is feeling lucky this March! Marvelous entertainers and singers will grace the stage all month long, creating an unforgettable experience. This month's performers include Mark Nadler 'Cole Porter After Dark', Gabrielle Stravelli, Kathy 'Babe' Robinson, Bob Egan (for his Bob Egan Showcase) and, Michael Richard Kelly. If you've been a regular reader of this particular reviewer's musings, you know that every year there are long stretches of time where I just haven't been able to critique all the shows I've seen that deserve commentary. So I end up playing what they call in sports, 'Catch-up ball,' and post a mash up of belated reviews from past shows. It's kind of like a critic's version of the song 'Six Months Out of Every Year,' from Damn Yankees. Give or take a month or two, that's usually the time period during which I store unpublished reviews in my fevered brain and then unload them all in one seemingly endless column-like this one is going to be. If my cabaret-show reviewing days will be over (as chronicled here), I might as well go out with a bang-and relieve my procrastination guilt during holiday season. Now I can scratch one New Year's resolution off the list.

In cabaret, there are variety shows and there are VARIETY shows. Going on close to three years as a reviewer and attending a myriad of these affairs that can range in feel from Ed Sullivan to the Gong Show, I no longer have much patience for the lower case version. But every once in a while there's a multi-performer extravaganza that screams capital letters. It turns out that MAC-Award winning singer Lauren Fox has acquired the knack for staging 'Big V' variety shows because they are all about the themes, the stories, and the music, and not about the performers. And wouldn't you know it? With the egos being upstaged by everyone's joy and passion for the project, everybody wins . . . especially the audience. That was the case last night at 54 Below with the Fox produced 'One Night of Peace & Music: A Tribute to Woodstock.'

I thought about many happy childhood musical theater memories last night while I attended the Dutch Treat Club's Annual Gold Medal Tribute Dinner and Show at the Harvard Club in honor of the legendary 'Fiddler of the Roof' lyricist Sheldon Harnick, who received the Club's Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in the Arts.
