Bernie Furshpan, creator of online nightclub/virtual performance platform, MetropolitanZoom, and his sidekick, Joanne Camilleri-Furshpan, are throwing a free, one-year anniversary show on Sunday, April 11 at 7PM EST online from Studio A in Long Island City. 

Bernie Furshpan pointed out that one door closes and two doors open inasmuch the clubs new home will have two entrances. It would have required many streets in Chelsea to accommodate all the performers and musicians who have appeared at the Metropolitan Room over the last 11 years. Dozens gathered outside with Bernie to celebrate a closing and an opening.

Bernie Fusrhpan, managing partner of the Metropolitan Room moved his club into the Friars Club last night and BroadwayWorld was there for the entertainment super special. 

Joe Sirola, one of the worlds most successful voice -over actors, film, TV, and stage actor, was honored in the the Metropolitan Room's famous, "This Is Your Night" series last night and BroadwayWorld was there. Managing partner Bernie Furshpan hosted the evening which had performances by Steve Ross, Shana Farr, Gregory Korostishevsky, Eric Rudy Lee Pfeiffer, Jamie deRoy, and KT Sullivan. Jon Weber served as music director.

Mary Tyler Moore may not have been in the Metropolitan Room last night as her former on-screen boss Ed Asner (Lou Grant in THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW) performed a one man comedy titled A Man and his Prostate written by Ed. Weinberger, but Broadwayworld was. Experience the show through our photos, below!

After 21 years as the cabaret light and sound guy, ministry was the only place left for Shawn Moninger to go. Now it;s 10 years later and Shawn returned to a club and made his cabaret debut last night at the Metropolitan Room. His opening act was Nancy Timanaro-Hogan, "The Loudest womean in the world!" and  BroadwayWorld was there. Check out photos below!

The Metropolitan Room hosted two simultaneous events last night. The 10th year of the MAC Award Winning Benefit Series Cabaret Cares, and the 3rd 40th Birthday of the charities creator Joseph Macchia. The non profit Joseph started 10 years ago has raised over $100,000 to help children living with HIV and AIDS. It was a cabaret spectacular and Broadwayworld was there to catch all the action. Marilyn doesn't have to sing "I Love Being Here With You" in New York City anymore. She always would motion for a response after the lyric "I wanna hear you call my name" and the audience would always shout out MARILYN. That song was not in her show. There's no need for MM to ask for recognition in this town. If you don't know that MARILYN means Marilyn Maye you are not a New Yorker. Personally, if I ask someone "when are you seeing Marilyn" and then get a confused look, I immediately know I'm talking to someone who doesn't get it.

I'm sure there has never been more talent in anyone's camera lens on 22nd Street in front of the Metropolitan Room than is represented in this photo. So for now, I hold that record as we approach 7PM on Jan 1st when hopefully the Guinness World record for Longest Variety Show will begin.

Singer and Broadway star T. Oliver Reid leads what he describes as "a club hopping journey through the swanky clubs and low down joints of 1934 Harlem," featuring the music of Duke Ellington, Harold Arlen, Andy Razaf, and more. In this new show, Reid performs each number with the unmistakable dramatic flair of a musical theater veteran, and he also provides an overview of the clubs, musicians, and social context of the music.

Acclaimed vocalist, Marieann Meringolo sings from the heart in her funny, poignant and romantic new show, Crazy Love. Please join Marieann as she explores the journey...and the risks...we all must take on the road to that 'special someone.' Directed by Eric Michael Gillett, the show features Musical Direction by Doyle Newmyer.

Between the two legendary bastions of great jazz, the Blue Note on West 3rd street, and Birdland on 44th Street, is another music stage on 22nd street. The kind of music usually associated with those two clubs was heard at the Metropolitan Room last night. With swinging and elegant singing, Kathy Sledge brought the music of Billie Holiday to the standing room only crowd that packed operating partner Bernie Furshpan's Cabaret venue. With a band that seemed to stretch the entire length of the room, a group of musicians called "Somebody Tell Joe & The Chops" turned on an engine of sound which was akin to hearing Count Basie and crew at the Sands in Las Vegas. As the leader shouted out the tempo cue, 1-2-3-4, horns raised and John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and Gillespie and Paparelli's "Night In Tunisia" lifted the musically elite audience out of their seats.

Gabrielle Stravelli - the acclaimed pop/jazz vocalist called 'ingenious' by The Wall Street Journal and known from her tours with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, appearances at the 92nd Street Y and her long-running Soho jazz brunch - is in the midst an exclusive two week engagement at The Metropolitan Room and broadwayworld was there

It's a New Year's tradition that doesn't get old. For the third year in a row Marilyn Maye brings back her exciting 'By Request' format for a week of raucous revelry after ringing out 2013 with back-to-back shows on New Year's Eve. Maye's remarkable performances will be accompanied by pianist/conductor Billy Stritch, bassist Tom Hubbard, and drummer Ray Marchica. The party doesn't stop until Sunday January 12. Last night, December 19, Town Hall overflowed with the musical joys of the season when three extraordinary talents, Leslie Uggams, Marilyn Maye and Christine Andreas took the stage for Holiday Belles. These award-winning singers brought their unique and diverse talents to the celebration, performing songs from the musical theater and the American Songbook, as well as holiday favorites. The concert, conceived and directed by Michael Bush, featured each singer performing her own individual set, and then brought them together for a very merry finale of holiday melodies. The internationally acclaimed Arab-Israeli singer/songwriter Mira Awad is joined by three special guests during her week long engagement at the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street starting next Tuesday June 4. On Wednesday June 5, Awad welcomes from Israel the singer-songwriter David Broza; on Thursday June 6, the New York-based percussionist Shane Shanahan joins Awad, and on Friday June 7, Ernie Hammes, the trumpeter from Luxembourg, makes a special appearance. Appearing with Awad throughout the week is guitarist Avi Fox-Rosen. All shows through Saturday June 8 are at 7pm. Check out photos from the concert below!
