Now a stage musical, John Cassavetes’ 1977 film Opening Night was a commercial flop when it was released, later becoming something of a cult classic of American independent cinema. Director Ivo Van Hove specialises in bringing work to the stage that may be called “challenging”. Challenging can be hugely successful, but I’ve rarely seen a production more determined to confuse and frustrate an audience.

Na een overweldigende première waarbij Jesus Christ Superstar in de landelijke dagbladen vijf sterren heeft gekregen is er een ware run op kaarten ontstaan. In enkele dagen zijn er tienduizenden kaarten verkocht, waardoor er nu al in totaal honderdduizend kaarten zijn verkocht. Producenten Albert Verlinde, Jaco Kaasschieter en Matthijs Bongertman zijn dan ook verheugd bekend te maken dat de musical in augustus terugkeert naar DeLaMar. Vanaf vandaag zijn de kaarten voor deze shows te koop.

Sheridan Smith is to star in the World Premiere of John Cassavetes’ Opening Night, a new musical with book by Ivo van Hove and music and lyrics by Rufus Wainwright.

It’s rather surprising, really, for the audience to embrace a contemporary piece like DEAD MAN WALKING, no matter how easily it falls upon the ears, considering the subject matter. In this Ivo van Hove production, it starts with a rape and double murder in a rather graphic piece of film, the use of video being one of van Hove’s trademarks. It ends with a death by lethal injection, also graphically shown in live video.
