Eleven world premiere plays and musicals seen first by Chicago audiences were among those receiving nominations by the Jeff Awards, announced today. A total of 192 nominations were made in 34 categories that honor Chicago Equity theatrical productions that opened between August 1, 2018 and July 31, 2019. During the 2018-19 season, Jeff Awards judges attended opening nights of 132 Equity productions offered by 43 producing organizations and from these openings, 112 productions were a?oeJeff Recommendeda?? and eligible for award nominations.

In IF I FORGET, Steven Levenson provides a close study of the kitchen sink family drama. At its center, the play addresses fundamental questions about what it means to be Jewish in America at the turn of the 21st century (the first act of the play takes place in July of 2000, while the second jumps to the post 9-11 moment of February 2001). IF I FORGET centers on the Fischer family as a means to pose those questions in a specific context through the family's three generations. In each individual scene, Levenson displays a knack for realistic and specific dialogue. Devon de Mayo's direction and the tight-knit ensemble also portray family tensions that feel altogether too real.

Victory Gardens Theater's Chicago premiere of Paula Vogel's Tony nominated INDECENT weaves a beautiful narrative about the transcendence of art and human resilience. Director Gary Griffin's staging feels both grandiose and intimate at the same time; the play's action spans a time period from 1906-1950 and travels across continents, but the vignettes contained in Vogel's story are rife with genuine, powerful human emotion. INDECENT was inspired by the true story of the 1923 Broadway debut of Jewish playwright Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance, which had an illicit lesbian romance as one of its main plot points. Vogel's story charts God of Vengeance's journey from the moment Asch first presents the script to his wife through to its first reading and multiple staged productions.

Victory Gardens Theater under the direction of Artistic Director Chay Yew and Managing Director Erica Daniels, announces casting for its upcoming productions of Indecent by Paula Vogel, directed by Gary Griffin, Rightlynd by Ike Holter, directed by Lisa Portes, Pipeline by Dominique Morisseau, directed by Cheryl Lynn Bruce, and Cambodian Rock Band by Lauren Yee, directed by Marti Lyons. Nearly 150 years after Ibsen's masterpiece first thrilled audiences, it "is startling how current the play's ideas feel' (The New York Times) as it examines the complexities of corruption, greed and destruction of the environment and remains "a play so necessary, so exhilarating to experience.' (The Village Voice) When a water contamination crisis puts their community in peril, two brothers-Philip Earl Johnson as Thomas Stockmann, doctor and chief medical officer of the baths and Scott Jaeck as Peter Stockmann, Thomas' older brother and town mayor-face off in a battle of political ambitions and moral integrity.

Remy Bumppo Theatre Company, in its 22nd Season, will present three stories that explore the fears preventing us from reaching out, the infinite mystery of the mind, and the heartbreaking love that spans space and time.

Falls directs his adaptation, based on a translation by Eleanor Marx-Aveling, with a cast featuring Philip Earl Johnson as Thomas Stockmann, doctor and chief medical officer of the baths; Scott Jaeck as Peter Stockmann, Thomas' older brother and town mayor; Lanise Antoine Shelley as Katherine, Thomas' wife; Rebecca Hurd as Thomas' daughter, Petra. Rounding out the cast are Jesse Bhamrah (Billing), David Darlow (Morten Kiil), Allen Gilmore (Aslaksen), Aubrey Deeker Hernandez (Hovstad), Larry Neumann, Jr. (The Drunk) and Carley Cornelius, Arya Daire, Guy Massey, Roderick Peeples and Dustin Whitehead as townspeople.

Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls marks his 30th anniversary season with the Chicago premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker's (The Flick) adaptation of Uncle Vanya. Uncle Vanya opens tonight and appears for a now-extended run through March 19 in the Owen Theatre.

Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov, adapted by Annie Baker from a literal translation by Margarita Shalina and the original Russian text, is being directed by Robert Falls in its Chicago premiere, now through March 12, 2017 in the Goodman's Owen Theatre.
