Hey All -- not a newbie but looking for suggestions...
In NYC next month and I already have tix for:
Stereophonic, Hells Kitchen, Enemy of the People, The Mother Play, Sally and Tom, Breaking the Story. I have The Outsiders on my list but not booked and maybe Water for Elephants.
I have seen stuff that were playing in Feb 2024 (like Merrily, The Notebook and others). I am a little ambivalent but interested in a handful currently playing (off and on Broadway).
Does anyone have strong feelings about other shows? As always, thanks for any input.
I think ILLINOISE should be up for consideration, I found it to be moving and the best musical of the season...and I've seen almost everything.
W4E is enjoyable in the moment, but has a weak score and book. But the circus choreo and Paul Alexander Nolan's performance is spectacular.
I'm seeing Outsiders on Weds, so can't comment on it yet
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
I saw both The Outsiders and Water for Elephants this week and would definitely pick The Outsiders out of the two. W4E is good for the circus stunts but I think overall The Outsiders is a better show with better music.
Also if you are looking for another play I would definitely recommend Appropriate. A really strong cast across the board.
I enjoyed Outsiders quite a bit more that Water for Elephants. The music is is more memorable, Brody Grant's voice is great, and the act 2 fight scene is spectacular.
Despite the reviews, Cabaret was incredible. Heart of Rock and Roll was surprisingly fun despite the lack of love from reviews and the Tonys. I agree with Appropriate unless you saw it earlier of course.

Hadestown has a great cast right now, too."
Great suggestions so far - I miss Oh.Mary between its off to on Broadway move. I can only hope it lasts to my Feb 2025 trip."
Sell your neighbor's outdoor furniture on eBay to finance an additional trip in late June/early July just to see "Oh, Mary!". You'll be very glad you did
I really really disliked The Outsiders as did the three other people I went with. Two of us loved the book when we read it in our youth. It felt so dated. West Side story without the Bernstein and Sondheim score and without the Robbins choreography. A lot of telling and very little showing. Plus I was bored. I’d definitely recommend W4E which I really enjoyed. I thought it had the stronger score and choreography that commented on the plot. But I may be in the minority on this.
12 of us went to see 7 shows in spring and all of us but one thought that The Outsiders was the best show that we saw. The rumble is worth the price of admission.

Hey DramaMama... been laying low for some time. W4E circus choreography is kind of a draw for me and I saw a clip that featured Nolan and the choreography and it looked pretty decent (a Tony Awards type number I am sure).
To all sharing... I was in NYC in Feb for 15 days and did see Appropriate which was awesome for anyone looking (have a subscription for 2nd Stage this year - and seeing Mother Play and Breaking the Story this trip). Most of what I have not seen opened since Feb (but missed seeing Oh Mary - I think it was opened then and kicking myself).
Right now I have booked Sally and Tom (extended at Public), MaryJane, Stereophonic, 2nd Stage subscription for both Breaking the Story and The Mother Play, Enemy of the People, Hell's Kitchen.
Depending on how my social stuff goes, I will have anywhere from 2-8 more openings for theater but more likely 3 or 4 max (and affordability is becoming an issue this trip).
Of those I have not seen, I'd like to see Illinoise but not sure... a unique production like that is interesting even if not really my thing but I gotta like the music and not sure on that.
Please keep giving opinions as getting other's perspectives really does help me choose.
