I saw this play last year at the Humana Festival in Louisville and was very moved by the play and performances. Susan Stroman should take care of the blocking problems in Louisville.
this is nothing short of a homerun, i have never experience a play that made my face hurt so much from smiling, and my heart break so much at the same time, Colman Domingo dialogue is brilliant and i just loved living in his head for an hour and 50 minutes, if i had any critiques to how to make it stronger id say there is one scene toward the end of act 2 that could use a little trimming, but beyond that this very well may be one of the best plays you see this year.
A lot of funny & also poignant moments when everyone comes over to West Philly to celebrate Christmas. The grandmother has a potty mouth, the two men are having marital problems and are arguing over things like a juice cleanse regimen, one of the daughters shows up in a tight miniskirt and has a diva attitude, etc. Lots of family bickering. One of the nicest sets I've ever seen at the Vineyard - a beautiful & very well-detailed yellow kitchen. What a gorgeous Christmas tree appears in Act II as well. Very well acted, but could use a bit of trimming. The show ran 2 hours 25 minutes this past weekend.
