Who do you guys think will be nominated for Best Musical Theater album? Is Fun Home eligible since they had an Off-Broadway album? There's a lot of dialog on that album so I wonder if that will affect it.  Will The Last Five Years get any nominations at the Grammys or even the Academy Awards? What are your thoughts regarding any thing having to do with Theater and the 2016 Grammys and even the Academy awards?

My guess is that Hamilton will win the Grammy.

As for the Academy Awards, there's a movie coming out with Meryl Streep where she's in a band...I'm gonna go with that takes original song.

I think Fun Home is eligible since it was released within the deadline and its dubbed as "A New Broadway Musical" on the cover. I think Fun Home will win but Hamilton obviously definitely has a huge chance

Yeah I agree. It's weird to think they could be in the same category because we've been thinking of them as "non-competitors" for so long.

It'll probably get a soundtrack nomination but that's it.

Ricki and the Flash! The main original song of the film is "Cold One". I actually really like it, and I'm guessing that it will take original song too.

Thank you for the title! I really enjoy it as as well. It'll at least be nominated if only so Meryl performs in some way.

I'm looking forward to Ricki and the Flash. Amusing title but the idea of Meryl and Mamie playing mother and daughter in it is too cute to pass up. And as a lifelong Streeper, the very thought of her performing at the Oscars is like heaven on Earth. I'm not a fangirl. I swear.

I hope The Visit gets a nomination for the Grammy, although I don't think it'll win.

All in all however I think it's a bit early to be predicting the Original Song Oscar, since other movies are gonna come out before the nominations deadline.

I believe FUN HOME's new album will be eligible, but for you EGOT counters out there, I doubt Tesori or Kron will be counted among the nominees. The Grammy rules state that "lyricist(s) and composer(s) of a new score are eligible for an Award if they have written and/or composed a new score which comprises 51% or more playing time of the album" so, since FUN HOME received an album release previous to the current eligibility period and there is not a significant overhaul to the score, only the producers of the album, the engineers/mixers, and any principle vocalists (I would guess Malone and maybe Cerveris.)

THE KING & I may also rear its head here, as the Tony winner for Best Revival, but I think the other nominees had far superior albums. ON THE TOWN especially is a masterpiece to me as a recording, and ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY has Chenoweth's name (to my knowledge, Cheno has never won a Grammy so conceivably a win here could put her an Oscar away from EGOT.) Sting could conceivably wield significant stature within the music industry for a LAST SHIP nod, too. Don't count that out.

But HAMILTON is currently slated for a September release, which should slip it in under the eligibility rader. And there seems to be a considerable recency bias at the Grammys, so I have every expectation that everyone's favorite monolith should be our favorite here, too.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

The Grammy always goes to the top selling album of the year, so I expect it to be Hamilton.  Even as a late entry, it's popularity is already unstoppable and I think we'll see numerous headlines regarding its numbers upon its release.

Fun tidbits for HAMILTON's likely Grammy nomination: Lin-Manuel already won a Grammy for IN THE HEIGHTS' cast recording, and the HAMILTON recording is being produced by ?uestlove and Black Thought, who as members of the Roots have three Grammys to their name already.

It's interesting that Beautiful won this past year without even winning Best Musical (It only won Actress and Sound Design)

You'd think it would've gone to Best Score or Best Musical winners BMC, and GGLM

Beautiful won because of Carole King and it actually was the best album.

Hamilton will win if it meets the deadline. If not,

The Last Ship

Fun Home

American in Paris

Finding Neverland

Well, the Grammy committee must have thought "Beautiful" was a better show. It's not the same committee as the Tony voters. It didn't win because of Carole King, either. One of my favorite fun facts is that 2012 was the year they started awarding actors for their participation. Although I do find it odd that Annaleigh wasn't considered a principal soloist for "Kinky Boots". But I'm sure you have to occupy a certain percent to be an eligible soloist, which is why only Jessie was the only one eligible out of her cast. I would assume that Lin-Manuel will be the only eligible soloist should "Hamilton" get nominated. Also, ANY cast album can be nominated, it isn't only for Broadway albums. It is rare, but it has happened. However, I do think "Side Show" could be a contender for some reason? It did sell the highest its debut week, and the new orchestrations are gorgeous, not to mention Erin and Emily giving their life to the show. I hope its a dark horse and gets at least a nomination. But the competition is still.

In conclusion, this is the list I feel like could round out the nominees:

Hamilton

On the Twentieth Century

Side Show (if not, Something Rotten!, unfortunately.)

An American in Paris

They/them. "Get up the nerve to be all you deserve to be."

^^ it's most likely that a vast number of the voters didn't see any of the shows, since they aren't voting on the show; they're voting on the album. And if there's any identifiable bias in just looking at the recent winners, from the last decade or so, it's that the voters generally prefer contemporary-sounding musicals to more traditional Broadway. The kind of music that would win in other categories. WEST SIDE STORY in 2010 seems to be an exception to that, but it's competitors weren't groundbreaking cast recordings, either.

And I doubt many of anyone at the Grammys even noticed SIDE SHOW got a new album, let alone listened to it. Or will vote for it over HAMILTON, THE KING & I, FUN HOME, ON THE TOWN or TWENTIETH CENTURY, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, SOMETHING ROTTEN!, THE LAST SHIP, THE VISIT or FINDING NEVERLAND. Hell, THE GOLDEN APPLE complete recording might even get more votes than some of those.

"Well, the Grammy committee must have thought "Beautiful" was a better show."

The Grammy goes to the best produced album, not the best show. It is not a theater award, it is an award for the recording.

I'm not saying they always get it right, but that is why until a few years ago it was a producer/composer award, not a performer's award.

The producer of the musical does not win, the producer of the album does.

I wonder how the Finding Neverland concept album will come into play... would it be considered among other cast recordings as well, or would it be treated more as a pop album?

Finding Neverland has a cast recording and a pop album of the score. I have to just say, I predicted all of the nominees in this category last year and i was right about everything. I thought there were only 4 nominees so i left out WSS, but that was it lol

I think I stopped taking this award seriously after they gave an album with lyrics such as "Everybody Say Yeah" and "Now We Go Off Like Dynamite" the award over completely genius innovative lyrics such as "It is 2-L-8-4-U. WE-R-E-volting" and "So you think you're A-ble, To survive this mess by B-ing a prince or a princess, you will soon C, here's no escaping trage-D." just because of the name behind the album
