I'm not a fan of bio-juke box musicals, but..I really wouldn't mind seeing this.
I'm just posting to ask if a musical about Selena was ever in development or talked about?

I'd see it.

Something I could see Jennifer Lopez producing one day.

I watched the movie about her life earlier this year and really enjoyed it a lot.

I had never thought about this for a musical, but the idea really intrigues me.

I would love for there to be a Selena musical! I grew up watching the movie and listening to her music. But I don't think her music is the right kind of music for a musical. None of it really has enough story to it. I don't think the songs would be able to parallel well enough to her life for them to be a part of the story. They would just be playing songs to play the songs really. I couldn't really see any of them not being an outright concert performance. They wouldn't really be able to help the story move along.

If anything I think it could be a play with music. Like Lady Day. A show about a singer, with their music in it. But not what I would call a musical.

Not my cup of tea for the most part. (Although I enjoyed Fela!, likely because I knew nothing of him previously.)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I love, Love, LOVE that movie. The ending "drops the microphone" always makes me cry. I think it would be the next Jersey Boys in my opinion. Never seen that time of music on broadway before. Hope someone makes this happen one day before I die.

It actually already happened. I wanted to catch it when it played the Montalban in Hollywood in 2001, but I never got the chance. The Wikipedia page tells the sordid tale. Maybe it's time for a rewrite/revival?

A clip from the musical version, the girl playing Selena really butchers all her songs...

Well! I would certainly say let us see how On Your Feet fares, but I wouldn't object to a good stage production / bio show featuring Selena's music. Lord knows her life is ripe for a dramatic telling.
As someone from Texas and familiar with her story and the production of the film, I would only exercise great caution because the casting, politically, would be very tricky. There was MUCH controversy when Jennifer Lopez was cast because despite sharing the exact measurements of Selena - allowing them to very faithfully recreate her wardrobe, Lopez is not of Mexican descent and many people in the community were quite upset with that.

Actually there was a Selena musical in Mexico a few years back. It was terrible!!!! really bad... A lot of people still laughs about the fact it actually happened. Here's a clip from a TV promo appearance.
