#1November trip: Matilda or Side Show?
Posted: 9/16/14 at 12:41am

I will be visiting New York the end of November, and am trying to squeeze in a Saturday matinee. I can't decide between Matilda or Side Show. I am already seeing You Can't Take It With You that evening. Any advice?

Anything except for SIDE SHOW. It is one of the most banal shows I've ever seen, and no amount of glitter on top can mask the sh*t beneath.

For what it's worth, MATILDA will be around a lot longer than SIDE SHOW and will likely tour whereas SIDE SHOW will most likely not. So take that into account in terms of prioritization.

If you think that you will be able to see Matilda later on or on tour, see Side Show. If not, see Matilda. (I have seen both and MUCH prefer Matilda.)

Side Show was fantastic at Kennedy Center dont miss your chance to hear the beautiful score live. Matilda will be there for years.

Tough one! I am dying to see Side Show, but I also loved Matilda.

Personally, I don't see how anyone manages to sit thru Matilda unless you there to see and enjoy an actor who drew you to the show.
Side Show is a gem of a show, not for everyone to be sure, but a gem of a show and this one has a stand-out physical production, is heavily heavily revised from the original and worth giving a shot to. It also will not last too long in a theatre like the St James unfortunately.

I'd go for Matilda.
Side Show was quite mediocre and really lacked musicality other than two or three of the songs.

Matilda. The energy those kids have is unreal.

Thanks for all of the input. I think I am going to have to go with Side Show this trip. I may not get another chance to see it otherwise. Now my only concern is that it is not showing any orchestra seats for 11/15. The mezz is barely sold, so I am not sure why the orchestra is blocked for that performance. Mezz will probably be great anyway

I have been wanting to see Matilda for a while now, but I am sure it will tour my way in the next year or so.

I'd go with Matilda as well. Never been a fan of Side Show.

I like the Mezz there. Saw Bullets Over Broadway and it was a great view

I think you should see 'Side Show' because if you like it enough, you could probably recommend the show to more people...

I was underwhelmed by Matilda

Having seen the original Sideshow, I would go with the new version .

Sideshow, Matilda is going out on tour.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Let's be real: most kids have "unreal" energy. I'd go with Side Show.

I'm going to double-post to add that the front mezz at the St. James is one of my favorite places to sit on Broadway.

Stargazer2: Just realized that the show opens Nov. 17th... which means your performance is probably a "critics performance" and that may be why there are no Orchestra seats as they have to hold them till they have all the critics seating figured out in the final performances before the 17th.

Matilda was amazing kind of odd but very fun none the less. Like others said, it will be around for awhile. Sideshow is one of those musicals that you have to see at least once. If you are looking for something a bit more fun and exciting. Go with Matilda. If not, check out Sideshow.

HATED Matilda.

Loved Side Show...the original and the Kennedy Center production.
Looking forward to the revival on Broadway.
