Imagine what it would be like to sit in a theatre and see an actor portray not only yourself, but others who are only characters to the audience - but are very real to you. Last Saturday night, Jerry Torre revisited a treasured part of his young life as he watched his past recreated at Newington Mainstage's production of "GREY GARDENS: The Musical".

ACT has announced some of the casting for the first half of the upcoming Mainstage season. ACT's own Artistic Director Kurt Beattie gets back on the boards alongside Jeff Steitzer, Marianne Owen, Julie Briskman, and Laura Kenny in Assisted Living. In Other Desert Cities the critically acclaimed Marya Sea Kaminski makes her ACT debut going head to head with television actress Pamela Reed (Parks and Recreation, Kindergarten Cop) who is a UW Drama alumni and Washington resident. Many other notable local actors will be returning to ACT or making their debut including Jessica Skerritt, Matt Owen, Lori Larsen, Suzy Hunt, Aaron Blakely, and Kirsten Potter to name a few. Broadway legend Carol Channing is fond of telling the story about a group of Russian diplomats who came to see the original production of Hello, Dolly! in 1964. Although they spoke virtually no English, they sat through the show and visited with the star in her dressing room afterwards. Talking through an interpreter, they told her that they loved the musical because it was filled with so much optimism. Although they couldn't understand the lyrics, the ebullience of Jerry Herman's music allowed them to experience and enjoy what producer David Merrick touted as 'the world's happiest musical'.

Queen City Theatre Company announces auditions for the musicals GREY GARDENS and EVITA to be held on Sunday November 15th from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Monday November 16th from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. This is an oportunity for actors/singers to be cast in two of the most succesfull shows of all times in one unified audition for both. GREY GARDENS (book by Doug Wright, music by Scott Frankel and lyrics Michael Korie) and EVITA (music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice) are the award winning Broadway hit musicals and now will be produced in Charlotte by Queen City Theatre Company. GREY GARDENS will be receiving its Charlotte and regional debut with this production.

Two of the Twin Cities' most accomplished actors, Wendy Lehr and Christina Baldwin, will play the indomitable mother and daughter, 'Big' Edie and 'Little' Edie, in the Park Square Theatre and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts co-production of GREY GARDENS, opening March 25, 2009 (previews begin March 17). The show, by librettist Doug Wright, lyricist Michael Korie and composer Scott Frankel, earned widespread critical acclaim and three Tony? Awards during its nine-month run on Broadway. GREY GARDENS runs through May 17 in the Ordway's McKnight Theatre, 345 Washington St., Saint Paul.
