To celebrate the arrival of the acclaimed Fiasco Theater production of "Into the Woods" at the Ahmanson Theatre, Center Theatre Group has launched the "GO! To The Woods" mobile app and will hold a special "Family Day" event on Saturday, April 8, 2017.

The York Theatre Company (James Morgan, Producing Artistic Director; Evans Haile, Interim Executive Director; David McCoy, Chairman of the Board), dedicated to the development of new musicals and the preservation of musical gems from the past, as part of its acclaimed Developmental Reading Series, will present the staged readings of two new musicals:  Dutch Master, with music and lyrics by Jeffrey Stock (Triumph of Love), and book by Marc Acito (Allegiance), and The White Witch of Rosehall, with music by Balint Varga (Houdini the Musical), and book and lyrics by Bryan D. A Dog Story, a new musical with music and lyrics by Gayla D. Morgan (Mary - A Musical) and book by Eric H. Weinberger (Wanda's World), at The Loft at The Davenport Theatre (354 W. 45th Street), will play its final performance on Sunday, January 15th.

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.)'s world premiere production of Joseph Dougherty's Chester Bailey this past spring was the recipient three 2016 Theatre Bay Area Awards, including Outstanding World Premiere Play, Outstanding Production of a Play and Outstanding Lighting Design (Robert Hand).

While those seeking a similarly scaled production to the original Broadway production (or even the revival) might leave the Eisenhower Theatre somewhat disappointed, those open to experiencing a new interpretation of the familiar material might leave feeling they've had an opportunity to look at an old favorite with new eyes. Perhaps they might better appreciate what drew them to the story in the first place.

A DOG STORY is that rare musical comedy that manages to be sweet but not cloying, accessible but not banal, and light but not unsubstantial. With most of the city still in deep mourning over the election (and facing a logistical nightmare in Midtown for the next four years), this new musical--with a strong book by Eric H. Weinberger and excellent lyrics and music by Gayla D. Morgan-could not have come at a more perfect time. The show was an extended-release happy pill, after which you felt-if only for an hour or two-that everything will somehow be okay.
