Photo Flash: Chance Theater presents VIOLET; Opening Saturday

Chance Theater, Anaheim's official resident theater company, is pleased to announce its production of Violet, which will kick off its 20th Anniversary Season. The show has book and lyrics by Brian Crawley, music by Jeanine Tesori, direction and choreography by Kari Hayter, and musical direction by Robyn Manion. Violet will preview from February 2 through February 9; regular performances will begin February 10 and continue through March 4 at Chance Theater @ Bette Aitken theater arts Center on the Cripe Stage.

DTC Announces 2018-2019 Season

2017 Regional Theatre Tony Award recipient Dallas Theater Center (DTC) announces titles for the 2018-2019 season, including the heartwarming, southern comedy Steel Magnolias; the critically-acclaimed Broadway play and winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize, Sweat; William Shakespeare's delightful comedy, Twelfth Night; the acclaimed comedy, then film, Real Women Have Curves; a world premiere play set in Dallas, Penny Candy; a new play fresh off the New York theater season, The Wolves, and a fascinating play about the relationship between Muhammad Ali and Stepin Fetchit, Fetch Clay, Make Man. Productions will take place at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre at the AT&T Performing Arts Center and at the Kalita Humphreys Theater. 2017 Regional Theatre Tony Award Recipient Dallas Theater Center (DTC), in association with the Theatre Division of Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University (SMU), presents Frankenstein at the Kalita Humphreys Theater. Directed by DTC's Associate Artistic Director Joel Ferrell, Frankenstein begins on Feb. 2 and runs through March 4. Dallas Theater Center will host a curated conversation featuring insights into the world-premiere play Miller, Mississippi on Aug. 21 at the Beckley-Saner Recreation Center, located at 114 W Hobson Ave., Dallas, Texas 75224. In a moderated panel discussion, Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company members Alex Organ and Liz Mikel will discuss their experiences, and how they have informed their approach to the characters they portray in Miller, Mississippi. Moderated by Amber Sims, this conversation will address advantage and what happens 'when tradition is sacred, and change is slow'. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. with food donated by Babe's Chicken Dinner House, followed by the conversation at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Not every new musical can be a HAMILTON, but that's exactly what makes the eclectic genre of American musical theatre thrive and bloom. However, there are a few necessary, key ingredients in creating musical theatre magic, including relatable principal characters and some heartfelt showtunes. And, although Dallas Theater Center's efforts to produce an edgy new musical based on the Robin Hood folklore don't ever get past the surface of the legendary story, there's still something irresistible about being in the room where a new work is being created.

DTC Awarded $30k from National Endowment for the Arts

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in the NEA's second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $30,000 to Dallas Theater Center (DTC) to support the upcoming world-premiere production of Hood: The Robin Hood Musical Adventure. The NEA received 1,728 Art Works applications and will make 1,029 grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.
