ACT Announces Extension for BLACK WATCH

American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.) Artistic Director Carey Perloff announced today that their highly anticipated production of the National Theatre of Scotland's internationally acclaimed production of Black Watch has extended its run at The Drill Court at the Armory Community Center (333 14th Street, between Mission and Valencia) through Sunday, June 16. The production was originally scheduled to run through Sunday, June 9. Tickets for all performances are on sale now and may be purchased online at act-sf.org or by calling 415.749.2228.

Now celebrating its sixth year on the London stage, Nick Stafford's adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book continues to play to sell-out houses in the West End. War Horse, which has now been seen by over 1.6 million people in London and by over 3 million people worldwide, received its world premiere at the National Theatre in October 2007. Joey from the National Theatre's acclaimed production of War Horse appeared on stage at the Olympic Park to salute Team GB and the world's athletes. Led by Captain Nicholls (Alex Avery), Joey reared in salute to the crowd at Park Live, which included Zara Phillips who along with her team later won silver in the equestrian events in Greenwich. Now in its fourth year in the West End, Nick Stafford's adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's book has been playing to sell-out houses at the New London Theatre since March 2009. The Broadway production of War Horse, which continues its run at the Lincoln Center's Vivien Beaumont Theatre, was the winner of six Tony Awards including a Special Tony Award for Handspring Puppet Company. In February of this year War Horse opened to great critical acclaim at The Princess of Wales Theatre, Toronto. War Horse premiered at The National Theatre in October 2007.

DARK SISTERS, the new opera about a polygamist family with music by Nico Muhly, and libretto by Stephen Karam, takes a cue from the recent trial of FLDS leader Warren Jeffs. Mainstream Mormonism and its polygamist roots have become popular topics of late, visible everywhere from the Republican primary to Broadway to television shows like HBO's Big Love and TLC's Sister Wives. Nonetheless, DARK SISTERS succeeds in its careful rendering of the well-trod subject of polygamy - the opera soars on its own merits (Muhly's beautiful score and Karam's well-chosen images) without devolving into cult fetishism.

The National Theatre's award-winning production of War Horse is currently playing the New London Theatre, and will egin a full UK tour in Fall 2013, according to The Stage. While official tour dates and venues have not yet been confirmed, executive director Nick Starr revealed that in addition to the West End, Broaway, and upcoming Toronto production, there are also plans to open in Australia, Japan, and South Africa.
