BWW Reviews: Ogunquit Playhouse Mounts Muscular and Thrilling WEST SIDE STORY
by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold
- Sep 8, 2013
?The Ogunquit Playhouse's revival of the legendary Bernstein-Sondheim-Laurents-Robbins classic, West Side Story, which opened September 5th pulsates with muscular energy and wrenching pathos. It is a production which makes the essence of the original creators palpable at the same time that it takes a fresh, vibrant - and, yes - touchingly relevant look at the material. Moreover, the Ogunquit West Side Story, directed by BT McNicholl and choreographed by Jeffry Denman forges a thrilling bond between stage and audience in the immediacy of the action and emotion.

When WEST SIDE STORY played the Pantages for five weeks in late 2010, it had Southern Californians clamoring for tickets to sold-out performances. Now, WEST SIDE STORY returns for a strictly-limited eight performance engagement, playing April 9 - 14, 2013.
BWW Review: WEST SIDE STORY Misses Emotional Mark at The McCallum Theatre
by David Green
- Mar 8, 2013
West Side Story is widely considered to be one of the finest musicals ever written and it can be one of the most moving and emotionally-draining experiences one can have in the theatre. It has the capability of taking the audiences on a roller coaster of emotional highs and lows - from laughter to despair -- that, in capable hands, is so satisfying. However, I found the production last night at The McCallum to be less than satisfying. It was pretty. It was polished. But it was also pat and predictable and not the emotional journey that it could have been. This touring production wavered between 'soap opera' and 'sitcom' and never quite hit the mark on a dramatic level.

Troika Entertainment Launches National Tour of WEST SIDE STORY at Paramount Arts Center
by Robert Hazlette
- Oct 29, 2012
More than 50 years since the musical, West Side Story first appeared, it has been revived countless times and become a fundamental of musical theater companies of both professional and amateur standing. Although many productions are "attempted", it's very seldom that one is lucky enough to see a production that succeeds in the standards set forth by the original adaptation. Elements frequently missing are age-appropriate casting and the force to make the audience feel the danger within the plot.
