Review: THE LEHMAN TRILOGY at ACT Theatre
by Jay Irwin
- May 3, 2024
At first glance, Dear Readers, Stefano Massini’s “The Lehman Trilogy”, as adapted by Ben Power and currently playing at ACT, may seem like a daunting task. I mean, a 3-and-a-half-hour play (thankfully with two intermissions) about bankers. It doesn’t sound like a rollicking good time. It sounds like the theatrical equivalent of eating your vegetables. Well, with a scintillating script and stunning performances from the three actors in the play, these vegetables have been sauteed to perfection and spiced and sauced to delicious result.

Review: A CASE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD at ACT
by Jay Irwin
- Feb 9, 2024
If you’re unfamiliar with the playwright Samuel D. Hunter, Dear Readers, you shouldn’t be. His latest, “A Case for the Existence of God”, currently playing at ACT, isn’t the first of his we’ve seen in the area. We were blessed with his “A Great Wilderness” back in 2014, plus his “The Whale” which first got a workshop at the Icicle Creek Theatre Festival, not to mention it’s latest life as an Oscar winning film in 2022. His raw takes on modern lives are exhilarating and his current production at ACT is no different.

Review: MACBETH from Seattle Shakespeare
by Jay Irwin
- Oct 29, 2022
In this time of year with black cats, ghouls and ghosts, and things that go bump in the night, it stands to reason that Seattle Shakespeare would bring out one of the bloodier and creepier of Shakespeare’s canon, “Macbeth”, or “the Scottish play” as it’s known by superstitious theater folk who don’t wish to incur its curse. And while this production, directed by the incredible John Langs, hits most of the right notes (in more ways than one), there was one major point of the show that just didn’t work for me. But we’ll get to that in a minute.
