Descended from the Old English sele, or 'hall', the word SALON has come to mean a gathering designed to entertain and enlighten (from BUST magazine). The events reached their 'apogee' during the 17th and 18th centuries in French aristocratic homes. There were rich and plenteous foods, there were games and glamour, music to engage in and these events were of course also 'binges of bon mots, banter and verbal and artistic prowess, intellectual orgies.' Salons were incubators of ideas that started with conversations.

Steep Theatre will present the Midwest Premiere of Irish playwright Ross Dungan's The Life and Sort of Death of Eric Argyle. Steep Artistic Associate and Jeff Award-winning director Jonathan Berry returns to Steep to direct Dungan's heart-warming and magical exploration of lives lived without regret. Steep and Berry have racked up an impressive string of Midwest premieres, including last year's If There is I Haven't Found It Yet and past hits The Knowledge, Moment and Festen. The Life and Sort of Death of Eric Argyle opens at Steep Theatre on Thursday, January 22.

Strawdog Theatre Company's 2013 - 2014 season opens with Conversations on a Homecoming by Tom Murphy, now through September 28, directed by Jonathan Berry, 3829 N. Broadway Street. Preview performance tickets are $15 with performances continuing Aug. 23 and 25. There is a Board Preview performance, Saturday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m., with $50 tickets that include access to a post-performance reception. Stage 773 serves as the arena for two devastating plays performed in rotating repertory: Brutal Imagination by Cornelius Eady, directed by Caffeine Managing Director Jason Beck, and Wreckage by Caridad Svich, directed by Joanie Schultz.

For the second year running, Seanachai teams with the Storefront Theatre to showcase another large cast production, this time set in the North of Ireland. With only a murmur heard of the Troubles that simmer under the surface, McCafferty's 'marvelous, engrossing, ensemble play' smashes the big picture into vivid snapshots of a single day of contemporary Belfast life. Originally presented by London's Royal National Theatre in 2003, this tale of 'lust, loss, hope, anger, grief, tenacity, old age [and] young fury' makes its Midwest premiere under the splendid direction of Scott Cummins.
