BWW Review: Benjamin Eakeley Dazzles with BROADWAY SWINGER at Feinstein's/54 Below
by David Clarke
- Jan 11, 2016
Last week, Broadway veteran Benjamin Eakeley delighted audiences with his charming solo cabaret Broadway Swinger at Feinstein's/54 Below. The 60s themed show featured a book by Tim Murray and Eakeley, which was filled with interesting factoids about the decade. It was also masterfully directed by JV Mercanti. Through the songs of Broadway and with a gorgeous vocal instrument, Eakeley charted how musical theater, much like the rest of America, transitioned from the saccharine sweet ideals of the 50s to the uninhibited and libidinous vibes of the sexual revolution.

FEINSTEIN'S/54 BELOW, Broadway's Supper Club, just presented BENJAMIN EAKELEY in his solo cabaret debut, 'BROADWAY SWINGER.' Benjamin Eakeley and his four-piece jazz band reinterpret classic songs from the 1960s in a lounge act that chronicles the American stage's evolution from conservative to carefree. 'BROADWAY SWINGER' is a groovy romp through the decade that gave us Oliver!, Cabaret, Hair and Promises, Promises. True to its name, this swingin' show examines shifting attitudes toward relationships and sex as it explores life, love and everything in between.

BWW Reviews: The Engeman 'Produces' a Sensational PRODUCERS
by Brian Rivera
- Jun 8, 2015
I want to express the deepest gratitude to the director, Igor Goldin, for not directing his actors into a corner with this show. Each and every person onstage had a story to tell, and not just some façade to put on: a worry I typically have when viewing a comedic musical. Even each member of the ensemble had fantastic individuality and characterization that it makes one wonder whether an ensemble needs to necessarily “blend together” – which, in fact, is quite difficult not to do when the show decks out its actors in outrageous costumes that make Betsy Johnson and Alexander McQueen look (I won't be forgetting you, anytime soon, Sausage Dress…). Though, it's the joint effort between the lead players and supporting players that create magic on that stage, and this cast did just that.
