Denver Center for the Performing Arts presents AMERICAN MARIACHI, a new play written by Jose Cruz Gonzalez. AMERICAN MARIACHI tells the story of a group of daring young women in the 1970s who break tradition to form an all-female Mariachi band. Both humorous and touching, The World Premiere of AMERICAN MARIACHI opened at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on January 26th, and will run through February 25th.

The Old Globe celebrates the world premiere of Jose Cruz Gonzalez's play American Mariachiwith a Virtual Battle of the Mariachi Bands. Starting today, February 2, Southern California mariachi bands can submit a video for the world to see (see below for contest guidelines). Audiences will then be able to vote for their favorite band startingFriday, February 9 at 12:00 noon through Friday, March 16. The first-, second-, and third-prize winners will be announcedMonday, March 19. Only the first 20 eligible videos received will be presented online to the public for voting, so interested bands should act fast!

The Old Globe's 2017 2018 Season continues with the world premiere of Jos Cruz Gonz lez's American Mariachi, a heartwarming comedy with live music. Directed by Globe favorite and San Diego native James V squez (Rich Girl, Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!) and presented in association with Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company, American Mariachi will run March 23 to April 29, 2018 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.

Goodman Theatre begins the new year with a new music-and-movement-filled play: Another Word for Beauty, a world premiere by Academy Award nominee Jose Rivera(The Motorcycle Diaries) inspired by an annual beauty pageant at El Buen Pastor womens prison in Colombia. Directed by Steve Cosson and featuring seven original songs by Grammy Award winner Hector Buitrago, the show was developed through a co-commission between the Goodman and Cosson's New York-based theater company The Civilians.

Goodman Theatre announces casting for ANOTHER WORD FOR BEAUTY, a world premiere music-filled work by Academy Award nominee Jose Rivera with music by Grammy Award winner Hector Buitrago. The distinguished Cuban-American playwright Eduardo Machado has created a touchstone piece by taking a one-act play with music, written in 1982, and turning it into a full-length, two-act musical. His 'Rosario and the Gypsies,' with songs by composer Rick Vartorella and lyrics by Mr. Machado and Mr. Vartorella, was a short, wild rock 'n roll play with music about the backstage romances and melodramas of a hippie performance troupe in southern California who were devoted to the art of change. Its songs were a combination of street pop and 60's-70's rock. It was produced in NYC by Ensemble Studio Theater in 1982 and it got Machado recognized as a writer to be reckoned with. Machado and Vartorella have now revised the piece and completed its story, adding a second act, in which we learn the future for its characters. Theater for the New City will present this revised and expanded version of 'Rosario and the Gypsies' from tonight, February 18 to March 8, directed by Machado.
