Earlier this week, the New York Musical Theatre Festival (running July 7 - 27) presented a special preview of the 2014 featuring musical selections from: Mr. Confidential, The Gig, Valueville, Somewhere With You, Clinton, WikiMusical, Bayonets of Angst, Academia Nuts, Mother Jones and the Children's Crusade. A new musical created by a team of Australian brothers, Paul and Michael Hodge, CLINTON will makes its US debut at the 2014 New York Musical Theatre Festival. The new musical will be directed by Adam Arian with musical direction by James Dobinson and choreography by Emily McNamara, it will begin performances July 18 through July 25 at The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street). As expected (thankfully) 2012 provided Southern California audiences--specifically here in Orange County and nearby Los Angeles and San Diego--a season full of outstanding, remarkable theater offerings from touring companies, impressive regional productions, and even some tiny black box theaters. And, of course, as is the common practice during the ushering of a new year, the enjoyable past-time of putting together a year-end 'best of' list is something contributor Michael Lawrence Quintos truly looks forward to doing, especially when there's a plethora of great work to choose from--many of which he had the pleasure of reviewing exclusively for BroadwayWorld.

The choices I have made are based solely on the plays and performances that I actually saw. I cannot see all the great talent that is out there in LA; it is physically impossible, as there exist far too many theatre/cabaret performances for one person to cover. So if a choice of yours is not on my list, chances are, I did not see that play or performance...or, it just did not make the final cut. I also do not separate Equity from Equity waiver; I consider all the productions/performances I select to be of top-of-the-line quality/professionalism.

Musical theatre performers Andy Taylor (currently off-Broadway and about to be on Broadway in Once; The Producers; Moon Over Buffalo), and Alet Taylor (The Brain From Planet X, The Producers, several Encores productions, and wife of Andy) are asked to star in a new musical for the Outside The Box Musical Theatre Company. Very few new shows, especially musicals, have that extra special spark, that je ne sais quoi that makes them a surefire success. For starters, there must be a good book - with a story that's credible...and funny - and a pleasant score that keeps your fingers and toes tapping, at least while you are in your seats. Justin Love, based on a story by David Elzer and Bret Calder, is one such musical, that , in spite of its excess, is guaranteed to make you laugh nonstop and with a cast and crew to die for.
