Chicago Shakespeare & Navy Pier to Construct New Theater Space on Lakefront

Chicago Shakespeare Artistic Director Barbara Gaines, Executive Director Criss Henderson and Board Chair Sheli Z. Rosenberg were joined by Navy Pier, Inc. CEO Marilynn Gardner and Board Chair William J. Brodsky as well as Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel today to announce the creation of an innovative performance venue, The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare. Construction on the theater begins this spring; Chicago Shakespeare plans to stage its first production in The Yard in the 2017-18 Season.

THE CHRISTIANS, a new play written by Lucas Hnath, will open at the Center Theatre Group / Mark Taper Forum on Sunday, December 13, 2015, at 7 p.m. CTG and Playwrights Horizons are presenting performances of the Actors Theatre of Louisville production through January 10, 2016. The Chicago Public Library Foundation and the Chicago Public Library presented the 16th annual Carl Sandburg Literary Award to legendary composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Universally heralded for his immense contributions to musical theater in a career spanning more than 50 years, Sondheim was at the Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner tonight, October 21, 2015 at The Forum (725 W. Roosevelt Road) on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago. The event was attended by almost 700 and raised more than $1.5 million to support the initiatives of the Chicago Public Library. Scroll down for photos!

The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) will present four Awards for Architectural Excellence during its annual SAH Awards Gala on Saturday, November 9, at The Casino. The awards will honor local individuals and organizations in the categories of design, planning and sustainability; media; criticism and stewardship. The theme of this year's gala is a Century of Progress: 1913-2013, recognizing the changes in the urban landscape over the past 100 years. The gala benefits SAH and supports its mission to promote the study, interpretation and conservation of the built environment worldwide.
Art Institute of Chicago Announces 2013 Schiff Foundation Fellowships

The Art Institute of Chicago's Architecture and Design Department has announced the winners of the 24th annual Schiff Foundation Fellowships. Evgeniya Plotnikova, a 2013 graduate of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), has been named the recipient of the $15,000 Schiff Foundation Fellowship for Architecture. Kathryn Loeb, a dual-degree graduate student in the departments of Art History, Theory, and Criticism and Arts Administration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), was chosen as the recipient of the $5,000 Schiff Foundation Fellowship for Critical Architectural Writing. In addition, Penelope Phylactopoulos (B.Arch. 2013, Illinois Institute of Technology) was awarded a Special Mention, a non-monetary award category begun in 2012, for her architecture project Silence Retreat.
