Seth Glier has been writing and performing songs ever since he was young. As he wrote his first song (a rap song that no one will ever hear), he had no idea his life would become what it has today. As Seth writes his music, he wants to be able to connect to his audience wherever he goes.

Recently visiting parts of Texas, Seth brought along his saxophonist, Joe Nerney as well as a new face, bassist and pianist, Marc Seedorf. While in San Antonio, Seth, Joe and Marc played a house concert and gained new fans from the experience. Then they moved on to Kerrville and played at the annual Kerrville Fall Music Festival. They wrapped up their whirlwind weekend with a visit to Austin and another house concert as they gained even more new fans.

I asked Seth about his experiences of being in Texas and what this music scene means to him.

Why do you enjoy playing in Texas so much?

I love playing in Texas because the state seems to be filled with real deal music fans. The fans there are some of the most loyal I have in the whole country. I've been making a point of touring in Texas for just about 6 years now and many of the fans have become friends. A show for me in Texas feels like the best kind of family reunion. I am so lucky.

What are the differences between playing a House Concert and playing The Kerrville Fall Music Festival?

A lot, both situations are about delivering the best songs but the vehicles in which they travel to people are vastly different. Kerrville has a big sound system and a big stage. I work hard to make that big stage feel smaller and smaller as the set goes on. I want the audience to feel like each song is intimately for them. In a house concert there isn't a stage so I try to create this larger than life atmosphere in the presentation....the whole "is this really happening in a living room" vibe.

I enjoy both settlings and they both teach me something different.

What are your plans for recording your new album?

I start on September 15th and I'm so so SO excited. It's been great to road test these new song live in Texas to discover which parts work and which parts don't.

In the past I've always hired a band to learn the songs. We rehearse as a band and record them as a band. Then I go off on tour in a more stripped down fashion.

This time I'm starting with what comes most natural. Me and my instrument (piano or guitar) and recording the songs as if I was playing them live for my audience. Then we'll add other instruments not based on what makes the "band" sound best but rather what serves the integrity of each song. It's a new process for me.
