Photo Coverage: First Look at HEART AND LIGHTS' Lady Liberty Puppet

The new show HEART AND LIGHTS is a love letter to New York, written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Doug Wright, which celebrates New York City as seen through the eyes of two cousins who discover their grandmother's past by uncovering the secrets of the city she loved. The limited five week engagement begins previews March 27, 2014 and runs April 3 through May 4, 2014.
The 26-foot tall animatronic Statue of Liberty puppet for HEART AND LIGHTS was loaded in to Radio City Music Hall earlier today, and BroadwayWorld brings you a sneak peek at her onstage below!
Lady Liberty is one of six puppets featured in the production. The high-tech puppet was built in Australia by The Creature Technology Company and due to its size, traveled for six weeks via ship prior to its arrival in the Big Apple
The Statue of Liberty is controlled both automatically using pre-programmed cues and manually by four puppeteers who can move her torso, arms, mouth and face. Lady Liberty features 20 motors in her face alone to mimic human-like facial movements. 1,760 lbs of steel and 753 square feet of draped fabric were used to construct Lady Liberty. The final face and robe surfaces were built, stitched and sculpted completely by hand and the fabric was dyed and hand painted to give the illusion of the original hard copper finish.
This 90-minute show features eight production numbers with new Rockettes choreography, dazzling costumes and state-of-the-art technology including 3D effects elaborate animatronics, puppetry and GPS elements. Heart and Lights celebrates what it takes to make it in New York City and what people love about it most: the action, the buzzing energy and the opportunity to live out your dreams. Whether one aims for the biggest stage or the brightest lights, it honors the drive and determination, the pulse and passion, the Heart and Lights!
