Photo Coverage: Cirque du Soleil's AMALUNA Opens in Toronto!

Cirque du Soleil's newest creation, AMALUNA, debuted this past Thursday in Toronto under the big top at Port Lands. The show, directed by Broadway veteran Diane Paulus, is loosely based on Shakespeare's The Tempest, and is a feast for all the senses.
On opening night, Cirque pulled out all the stops as they treated guests to complimentary cocktails, souvenir glasses, popcorn and even ice cream—all served under the big top in an electric circus atmosphere that had everyone excited.
The production is lush and polished, with gorgeous music, costumes and choreography. Ms. Paulus has taken the Bard's classic tale and put a new spin on it, with a focus on the strong female personality and elements within The Tempest. The result is a show that celebrates all things female, featuring various Goddesses and Amazons who are the perfect balance of femine mystique and strength.
Perhaps the best thing about AMALUNA is its ability to make everyone in the audience, young and old, feel like a kid for one evening. It was easy to tell by surveying the opening night audience that everyone was enthralled by the production, and the show is such a treat for the senses that one can't help but get excited like a kid on Christmas morning. But while the show is a veritable feast for the senses, it also tells a powerful and moving story that is extremely well executed.
