To many, modern art means post-1940s abstraction. Yet American modernism got its start decades earlier and took several forms. The Terra Foundation for American Art, Milwaukee Art Museum and the American Decorative Art 1900 Foundation are convening a free two-day, two-city symposium, ?What?s Modern about American Art, 1900 ?1930?? on June 19 (Chicago) and June 20 (Milwaukee). The symposium explores modernism as expressed in American painting and design from 1900 to 1930. Free registration is required, and includes free round-trip transportation between Chicago and Milwaukee for the June 20 programming. Tricycle Theater Presents THE GREAT GAME: AFGHANISTAN

The Tricycle Theatre will present The Great Game: Afghanistan from 17 April - 14 June 2009, a festival exploring Afghan culture and history through fifteen plays, a ten day film programme, Qawali Sham Sufi Group concert, ceramic and photographic exhibitions, discussion sessions, writers' talks and play readings (in conjunction with the National Theatre Studio). Previews for The Great Game: Afghanistan begin on 17 April with a press day on 24 April. In addition, the Tricycle's Education Department will produce a series of projects to support the Festival.
Colony Theatre Company's CANDIDA to Begin Previews February 4

The Colony Theatre Company presents the fourth production of its 2008 - 2009 season, CANDIDA, written by George Bernard Shaw and directed by Kathleen F. Conlin. CANDIDA will preview on Wednesday, February 4; Thursday, February 5 and Friday, February 6 at 8:00pm and will open on Saturday, February 7 at 8:00pm and continue through Sunday, March 8 at The Colony Theatre, 555 North Third Street (at Cypress) adjacent to the Burbank Town Center.
CANDIDA is the delightful, light-hearted classic from George Bernard Shaw, writer of Major Barbara and Arms and the Man, winner of the Academy-Award for writing Pygmalion, and recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
Reverend Morell thinks he and his wife, Candida, have the perfect marriage, but when a passionate young poet also declares his love for her, Morell begins to doubt whether his wife loves him after all. Written over 100 years ago, George Bernard Shaw shows that marriage hasn't changed all that much. Directed by Kathleen F. Conlin, from her acclaimed production at the Utah Shakespearean Festival.

Rupert Goold directs Michael Gambon, David Bradley, David Walliams and Nick Dunning in Harold Pinter's No Man's Land, at the Duke of York's Theatre. The production is currently booking until 3 January 2009. A Gate Theatre, Dublin production, No Man's Land is presented by Sonia Friedman Productions and Michael Colgan, with design by Giles Cadle, lighting by Neil Austin and sound and music by Adam Cork. Goold's production transfers to London following its opening at the Gate Theatre, Dublin in August.
