BWW Review: Playhouse Stages a Large Scale ALL THE WAY
by Joseph Baker - Mar 7, 2016

'I am in blood stepped in so far that should I wade no more, / Returning were as tedious as go o'er,' says Macbeth in William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name. I have always felt that these lines could have described President Lyndon Johnson as he doggedly followed his disastrous course in Vietnam. Now, certainly, Johnson was no villain as such; however, to countless Americans, his term in office will be forever marred by his hubristic determination to succeed. For some families touched by tragedy, his very name will be forever reviled. However, in recent years, many historians (such as Doris Kearns Goodwin) have tried to see 'the forest' beyond 'the trees' and have lauded Johnson for effecting legislation that culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and in voting rights for Blacks. Playhouse on the Square's current production of Robert Schenkkan's ALL THE WAY (recalling LBJ's campaign slogan 'All the way with LBJ') focuses on Johnson's political maneuvers in that arena -- especially as they factor in his desire to be elected as something more than an 'accidental President.'

BWW Review: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Powerful and Compelling ALL THE WAY
by Chris Gibson - Sep 17, 2015

Taking it's name from the campaign slogan Lyndon B. Johnson would utilize for his run for the presidency in 1964, playwright Robert Schenkkan has crafted a brilliant, compelling, and very informative work with ALL THE WAY that picks up right after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963. Schenkkan has actually written another play (THE GREAT SOCIETY) that follows subsequent events in Johnson's life from 1964-1968. But, here the focus is on that tumultuous period when the nation was basically in shock as they witnessed their iconic fresh-faced president being gunned down, and with it their dreams of a 'new frontier'. However, they didn't realize they were in the hands of a career politician who knew that the road to something more than an 'accidental' presidency lay in his ability to make sweeping changes in our society, no matter what the cost. The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis opens their season with a masterful production of this intriguing play, and I think you'll be blown away by revelations that have been glossed over in history books. A very strong cast and crew bring this story to life with amazing results that are thought-provoking and fascinating.

BWW Reviews: ALL THE WAY is an Intriguing Look at the Accidental President
by Frank Benge - Apr 13, 2015

'What the hell's the point of being president if you can't do what you know is right?' That single statement, made by President Lyndon Johnson, sums up the theme of ALL THE WAY; a new play by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Robert Schenkkan, now playing at ZACH Theatre. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Play, ALL THE WAY examines the period between Kennedy's assassination and Johnson's landslide reelection on November 3, 1964. ALL THE WAY is the first of two plays by Schenkkan on Johnson's presidency. The second part, THE GREAT SOCIETY, continues the Johnson story from 1964 to 1968.
