Breaking: Cast Gathers for 1776 Workshop; Confirmed for Spring 2021 Broadway Season

BroadwayWorld has just learned that the cast has been assembled for Diane Paulus' Broadway-Bound 1776, which just began a Zoom workshop. Exact production dates have not been announced, though the A.R.T. has confirmed that the musical will play as a part of its 2020/21 Season, and Roundabout will bring it to the American Airlines Theatre in Spring 2021.

Continuing their mission of curating history by bringing back ghosts of musical theatre past in staged concert performances, F/54B wisely chose the Zellniks' beautiful patchwork quilt of pastiche, put it on their tiny stage and gave friends, fans, and a few newbies a look back at a show that looks back at a time when MGM musicals offered wholesome family entertainment and real soldiers did a lot of foot-tapping... but weren't dancing.

Nowadays there appears to be an increasing awareness in the theatre about presenting women characters through the aesthetic of male playwrights and directors, much of it involving the movie term 'male gaze' which was coined by Laura Mulvey in the 70s to describe the disproportionately sexualized manner in which women were presented in film. From that context, it's possible to conclude that this is what playwright/actor Charles Busch has been commenting on all along.
