The writers & stars of the Off-Broadway hit comedy HOW TO BE A NEW YORKER confronted last Thursday's heat wave head on by bringing free lemonade to thirsty New Yorkers in Central Park. Margaret Copeland and Kevin James Doyle wound their way through the hot, humid park Thursday morning 5/30, distributing refreshing liquid reinforcements to locals and tourists (without discrimination!), making loads of new friends along the way. Following a successful weeklong run at Lincoln Center, the acclaimed documentary The Girls in the Band is coming to New York's Quad Cinema for a two-week run beginning May 24. Written, directed and produced by Judy Chaikin and produced and executive produced by Michael Greene, the film tells the stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists from the 1920s to the present day and chronicles their inspired journeys and struggles for recognition. To celebrate the film's Lincoln Center premiere, Mayor Bloomberg declared May 10 "Women in Jazz Day." Tickets for the Quad Cinema screenings will be available here. The film will also play for one week in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Noho 7 beginning June 4. Screening times and tickets for the Los Angeles run are available at here.

The stars of Off-Broadway's hit comedy HOW TO BE A NEW YORKER performed live for THE RIDE on May 8th in Times Square. As the giant tour bus approached the Lyceum Theatre on 45th Street, it stopped in front of HOW TO BE A NEW YORKER's Margaret Copeland and Kevin James Doyle clad in elderly garb on the sidewalk. To the delight of the passengers, they performed the opening sketch of the show in which two altkakas bitterly (and hilariously) complain about a bygone New York City before gentrification wiped out all the fun. Mayor Bloomberg to Inaugurate Orly Genger Installation in Madison Sq Park

Madison Square Park Conservancy's Mad. Sq. Art announces a new installation for Spring and Summer 2013 by New York-based artist Orly Genger. The monumental commission entitled Red, Yellow and Blue will feature the artist's renowned usage of intricately hand-knotted nautical rope covered in paint, creating a work that will transform the park's lush lawns into colorfully-lined chambers. The work will remain on view daily from May 2 through September 8, 2013 in Madison Square Park. Following its New York run, the installation will travel to the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum outside of Boston in October 2013, marking the first Mad. Sq. Art commission to tour.
NYC Welcomes 20,000 Trees in Largest Tree Planting Effort of Spring 2013

Today NYC Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White joined NYS Assemblyman Edward C. Braunstein, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Carter Strickland, Department of Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner Edna Wells Handy, Human Resources Administration Commissioner Robert Doar, NYC Service's Chief Service Officer Diahann Billings-Burford, and more than 500 volunteers at Alley Pond Park in Queens to plant 7,405 trees and 1,950 shrubs at the MillionTreesNYC Spring Planting Day. Other parks hosting planting events today were: Idlewild Park in Queens; Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx; and Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn. Clove Lakes Park will host a planting event on Sunday. Over the course of the weekend, 20,000 trees will be planted citywide.
