New Theatre Study Finds Women, Minorities Get Hired Less, Paid Less

Actors' Equity, the national labor union representing professional actors and stage managers, released a groundbreaking new diversity study of employment on two of its major contracts. The study, which examined the casts of new productions that opened between 2013 to 2015, shows that women and members of color have fewer work opportunities and often draw lower salaries when they do find work.

In an historic decision, the National Council of Actors' Equity Association (Equity), the labor union representing professional stage actors and stage managers, voted during its August meeting to endorse the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, Hillary Clinton. This marks the first time in Equity's 103-year history that the organization has endorsed any political candidate.

Actors' Equity Association and Cirque du Soleil Theatrical, the theatrical division of Cirque du Soleil and the division charged with producing shows for Broadway, have entered into an agreement for all future Cirque du Soleil Theatrical productions on Broadway (as well as pre-Broadway and post-Broadway tours) to be produced under Equity contracts.

As reported by BroadwayWorld, members of the Los Angeles theatrical community filed a lawsuit against Actors' Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers, earlier this year, challenging the Union's decision to eliminate its 25-year-old waiver of jurisdiction over small 99-seat theaters, a program popularly known as Equity Waiver.
