Houston Grand Opera Announces 2018 19 Season

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) will present its 2018 19 season in its creative home at Houston's Wortham Theater Center after a year of displacement due to damage to the building from Hurricane Harvey.
2018 Alley ALL NEW FESTIVAL Begins This Saturday

The Alley Theatre's Alley All New Festival, January 20-28, 2018, features six playwrights and more than 30 actors from the Alley and around the country who will be presenting new work through a series of readings and workshop performances. In addition to Alley Resident Company members, many artists have existing connections to the Alley and some are making their Alley debut. The start of the festival will celebrate the reopening of the Neuhaus Theatre. Houston Cinema Arts Festival Opening Night is a Success!

The 2017 Houston Cinema Arts Festival which took place from November 9 13, 2017 celebrated the undying resilience of the City of Houston as it played host to over 30 unique programs spread across multiple partner venues, including Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Rice Cinema, White Oak Music Hall, DiverseWorks, Aurora Picture Show, Caf Brasil, and more.
Houston Ballet Trustee, Lynn Wyatt, Donates Generously to Ensure the Show Will Go On

Immediately after Hurricane Harvey, long-time Houston Ballet Trustee, Lynn Wyatt, stepped in to make sure Houston Ballet dancers could continue dancing and carry on with performances. With the company's home venue, The Wortham Theater, closed until May 2018, Houston Ballet will have to utilize alternative venues for upcoming its 2017-2018 Season. The company was in need of a portable dance floor to ensure their health and safety in an alternative venue, and without hesitation, Mrs. Wyatt generously underwrote a specialized, portable dance floor to meet that need while enhancing the dancers' performances as well as travel with Houston Ballet when the company goes on tour.

Houston Grand Opera Announces Concert of Arias 2017 Winners

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) announced today the winners of the 299h annual Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers that took place on the evening of January 27 at the Wortham Theater Center's Cullen Theater. For the first time, the Concert of Arias was streamed live on Facebook, and viewers were able to cast their votes for an Online Viewers' Choice Award. The winner was announced during the second portion of the program, along with the other winners.

Houston Grand Opera expands its commitment to broadening the audience for opera with a 2017-18 season that includes the first presentations of Leonard Bernstein's classic musical West Side Story by a major American opera house and the world premiere of composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Royce Vavrek's holiday opera The House without a Christmas Tree. HGO will present its first performances in a quarter century of two iconic works: Richard Strauss's revenge-filled Elektra with virtuoso sopranoChristine Goerke in the tempestuous title role and 2016 Richard Tucker Award-winner and HGO Studio alumna Tamara Wilson in her role debut as Chrysothemis, under the baton of HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers; and Bellini's grand-scale tragedy Norma showcasing the debut of stellar dramatic soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska in the notoriously difficult title role, with 2015 Tucker winner and HGO Studio alumna Jamie Barton as Adalgisa.

The colorful production features tenor Dimitri Pittas and soprano Nicole Heaston, as well as the HGO debut of eminent English conductor Jane Glover. Performances run through November 4.
