Desert Rose Playhouse succeeds spectacularly in its 2016 Gay Heritage play: Tony Kushner's ANGELS IN AMERICA, PART ONE: MILLENIUM APPROACHES. Director Jim Strait superbly stages the iconic show about the challenges of being gay in the 1980's. The cast and design are excellent. The production is a must-see.

Break A Leg Productions kicks off its Historically Speaking series with a staged reading of The Brother. Written by John Hancock and Dorothy Tristan and based on the book by New York Times reporter Sam Roberts, The Brother looks at the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg from the viewpoint of Ethel's brother David Greenglass. The reading will take place on Monday, September 28 at 6:30pm at The Unity Center of New York City, located at 213 West 58th Street (between 7th Avenue and Broadway).

Acclaimed stage and screen actress Karen Ludwig will star in WHERE WAS I? directed by two-time Emmy Award winner Dorothy Lyman. Previews begin tonight, September 1, at Theatre 54. Opening is slated for Thursday, September 3.

As part of the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival, Mine is Yours Theatre Company will remount their adventurous 90-minute production of R&J, a gender-reversed Romeo and Juliet, which had a successful preview run last November at Theatre of NOTE. While remaining faithful to Shakespeare's language, R&J transforms Romeo into Romea, Juliet into Julian, Friar Laurence into Sister Laurence, etc., in an extravaganza of gender-swapping that makes this classic love story resonate in an electrifying new way. 

'Kafka's Quest, a.k.a. Kafka/Samsa' is a quasi-realistic play by the late playwright Lu Hauser that imagines the family life of Gregor Samsa, the tragic victim of Kafka's 'Metamorphosis,' and his friendship with an historic Yiddish Theater actor and actress in Prague, prior to the events of the famed novella. Set in Prague in 1912, it portrays Gregor Samsa (the name Kafka personified himself with in the book) as torn between his father, who wants to keep him on the straight and narrow with a full time job, and his friendship with artists of the Yiddish Theater, who want him to join and write for them. His father's bankruptcy forces Gregor to become the breadwinner of the family, which has been forced to take in two mysterious lodgers to make ends meet. The back and forth between the two poles of Gregor's life will culminate in 'The Metamorphosis.' Theater for the New City will present the play's world premiere February 26 to March 15, directed by Manfred Bormann.

Mine is Yours theatre company, now in their second season, is itching to share their first contemporary production with Los Angeles! Bachelorette by Leslye Headland, directed by Jessica Hanna and assistant directed by Mallin Alter, will run for four weeks this Spring: March 20 - April 12, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm. 20 Years ago a bright eyed theater nerd (as opposed to the bitter, jaded wretch I am today) was over the moon that the Intiman Theatre was able to get the rights to do one of the most exciting and talked about plays of the day, "Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches" so close on the heels of it's wowing Broadway and winning the Tony and Pulitzer. That fresh faced 25 year old was blown away by the artistry, language and sheer incredible storytelling prowess of author Tony Kushner and that amazing production solidified my love for this work. But can anything compare to your first time? Well the bloom may be a little off the rose and my cynical sensibilities of today may have missed some of the focus and wow factor of that original production in this current one being presented by Intiman Theatre, but the play still shows itself to be a masterwork and still deserves attention.

The Warehouse Theatre has unleashed "Perestroika," and it's a powerful conclusion to Tony Kushner's two-part epic "Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes."

Soulpepper's production of Angels in America is a massive undertaking, their biggest show to date and incredibly ambitious. That said, it is a risk that appears to be paying off for the Toronto based company. The show is triumphant - a heartfelt examination of humanity, sickness, politics, AIDS and more. It forces us to consider our own place in our community, and the lengths to which we will go to help our fellow citizens? Are there still angels in America? Maybe not, but the production on stage at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts is certainly heavenly.
