The Critics Choice Association (CCA) have announced the date and honorees for its inaugural Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television. Several honorees are Broadway performers, including Nathan Lane, George Takei, and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez. The gala event will be hosted by actress, stand-up comedian, and writer Sherry Cola, a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and a barrier breaker as a queer Chinese-American immigrant woman in film, television and comedy. 

The Lincoln Center Theater production of Anton Chekhov’s UNCLE VANYA, with a new version by Heidi Schreck and directed by Lila Neugebauer, just celebrated its opening night at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. Check out photos from inside the big night!

This morning, nominees for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards® honoring outstanding individual, cast and ensemble performances for the past year were announced. A re-imagined production of Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee’s Inherit the Wind is currently playing on the Pasadena Playhouse stage, just extended through December 3, 2023. Michael Michetti directs the cast, led by Alfred Molina & John Douglas Thompson as the battling lawyers in a trial inspired by the Scopes Monkey trials in 1925. Rounding out the talented company: Chris Perfetti, Abubakr Al, David Aaron Baker, Rachel Hilson, Jared, Brian Calì, Marlene Forte, Matt Gomez Hidaka, Thomas Hobson, Michael Kostroff, John W. Lawson, Philip J. Lewis, Gabriella Pizzigoni, Rene Rivera and Pam Trotter. After the whirlwind of opening night and unexpected COVID cancellations, John Douglas graciously found some time to chat with me on the phone.

Director Michael Michetti has put thought and heart into his production and peopled it with a strong cast whose characters opt for playing the strength of their convictions over histrionics. A hurricane force this WIND is not, but there’s plenty to enjoy.

“THE ANNE FRANK GIFT SHOP,” a new award-winning dark comedy from Reboot Studios and writer Mickey Rapkin (Pitch Perfect) and includes Ari Graynor (FX’s “Mrs. America”), Chris Perfetti (“Abbott Elementary”), Kate Burton (Tony nominee for “Hedda Gabler”), Jason Butler Harner (“Ozark”), comedian Mary Beth Barone and Josh Meyers (“MadTV”). 

Performing and visual artists are banding together in Save NYSSSA Now to relaunch arts programming for talented high school students in the 52-year old New York Summer School for the Arts, known as NYSSSA. Despite an even greater need for student expression, the program has not been scheduled for 2024.
