LA Phil's 2015-16 Green Umbrella Series Announces Contemporary Music Lineup

Every season the Los Angeles Philharmonic, though its cutting edge Green Umbrella new music series, provides patrons with its most intellectually daring forays into the works of living composers and musicians. Overseen by LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams, the Green Umbrella series consists of five concerts during the 2015/16 season performed by the LA Phil New Music Group and guest ensembles and presents eight new commissions, seven world premieres, three U.S. premieres, and five West Coast premieres.

LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams leads the LA Phil New Music Group in an evening of edgy works by some of today's most avant-garde composers - HK Gruber, John Zorn and Olga Neuwirth - at Walt Disney Concert Hall, tonight, January 13, at 8 pm. The concert features performances by chansonnier Pieter Embrechts and countertenor Nathan Medley in a staged production by Chromatic, a Los Angeles-based production company led by director James Darrah.

When New York's Gotham Chamber Opera--in collaboration with the Gerald Lynch Theatre at John Jay College--presented Toshio Hosokawa's THE RAVEN in its US premiere last week, as part of the NY Philharmonic Biennial, the composer could not have wished for a production that made a better case for it. Yet, despite the company's best efforts--and a wonderful concert opener based on an Edgar Allan Poe story, “Mask of the Red Death”--this was a less-than-fulfilling evening.

New World Symphony Opens Season with World Premiere of Video Work by Tal Rosner Today

The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), opens its 2013-2014 season this weekend, October 5 and 6 with the world premiere of a video work by artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner. The video, which accompanies the Four Sea Interludes from Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes, is co-commissioned by NWS, Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony. The New World Symphony performances, which will include a WALLCAST concert on October 5, are conducted by NWS Founder and Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas and feature Gershwin's Cuban Overture and Piano Concerto in F performed by renowned pianist Yuja Wang, as well as Stravinsky'sPulcinella Suite.

The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), is pleased to share details of our 2013-2014 season. As a research-and-development arm for classical music, the coming season includes a series of commissions, partnerships and events that showcase NWS as a laboratory for generating new ideas about the way music is taught, presented and experienced. Highlights include the commissioning and presentation of new works by emerging and established artists, the development of multi-media collaborative projects, and the continuation of innovative concert formats. These initiatives exist with the goal of developing New World Symphony Fellows, who will advance the field of classical music and become ambassadors for the art forms in their communities and beyond.

Call It Courage, adapted from the Newbery Medal-winning children's tale by Armstrong Sperry, will return to the Honolulu Theatre for Youth stage tonight and tomorrow, June 14 & 15 as part of the Network of Ensemble Theatre (NET)'s MicroFest USA: Honolulu - A National Summit and Learning Exchange taking place June 13 - 18.
