Megan Lewis, Alex Hoeffler and More to Star in DERMA Premiere at 2013 Piccolo Spoleto Festival, 6/3-8

The Piccolo Spoleto Festival and Banner New York have announced the premiere of Derma, a stirring new American musical to run at the Woolfe Street Playhouse in Charleston, SC from June 3rd through June 8th, 2013. www.dermathemusical.com.

Derma tells the story of one woman's life as she battles a mysterious illness that threatens to separate her from her family. When Joan, a beautiful, vivacious young woman, is diagnosed with scleroderma, her life becomes a constant struggle with both her disease and her personal demons. The musical takes place between 1959 and 1985, and its original score reflects the musical styles of those decades. Derma explores the boundaries of life, love, and what it means to be forever trapped in your own skin.

The musical features music and lyrics by Drew Brody, and a Book by Jared Coseglia & Cory Grant, who will also direct. Julian Barnett will choreograph the production.

Says Coseglia: "Derma tells a story of a woman fighting to live the fullest life possible, despite what seem like insurmountable obstacles. It's about leaving your mark on this earth no matter how small. It's a delicate, intimate musical sure to inspire us all to love fully and live freely."

Derma's cast is led by Megan Lewis, who will play Joan. Ms. Lewis recently appeared on Broadway in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Grey Gardens and off-Broadway in BARE, Forbidden Broadway, and The 60's Project. Alex Hoeffler, fresh off his Broadway debut in Lincoln Center Theater's War Horse, will play the roles of Richard and Danny, and Jenny Rose Baker (Broadway's Annie Get Your Gun w/ Bernadette Peters & Reba McEntire, Annie National Tour) will portray Maggie and others.

Derma will be directed by Jared Coseglia & Cory Grant, who co-authored the book of the musical. Coseglia also directed a production ofThe Lightning Field, which won best play at Fringe NYC 2005, and received the GLAAD Award for best Off-Off Broadway Play. He was also the assistant director on Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks starring Polly Bergen and Mark Hammill on Broadway. Cory Grant is an actor and writer who has collaborated with Coseglia and Drew Brody for the past eleven years. He has numerous acting credits, including the role of Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys on Broadway and in Chicago. His other New York acting credits include Mick in Broken Hands, for which he won Best Actor at the 2006 Fringe NYC Festival. Coseglia & Grant most recently collaborated on the world premiere of Cutman: a boxing musical, produced by Goodspeed Musicals in 2011.

Julian Barnett will be Derma's choreographer. Mr. Barnett has performed and choreographed throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, and is a founding member of Larry Keigwin's New York Dance Company. His first work, FLOAT, originally premiered at the La Mama Theater in New York and was acquired by the repertory company Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and performed internationally. Since then, Mr. Barnett has created and performed several experimental works, including MONUMENT (Dansateliers, NL), SUPER NATURAL (Dance New Amsterdam, NY) and SOUND MEMORY (Danspace Proect, NY).

Drew Brody, who wrote Derma's music and lyrics, recently collaborated with Coseglia and Grant on Cutman: a boxing musical. A New York City-based songwriter, Mr. Brody wrote and produced his own solo studio album in 2007, and recently wrote the music and lyrics for two musicals, The Mudge Boy, and Wilshire, which each had readings in 2012.

Jared Coseglia will be making his return to the Piccolo Spoleto festival thirteen years after performing there in a Burning Coal production of Tom Stoppard's Travesties, directed by Rebecca Holderness in 2000. Coseglia recently moved to Charleston after falling in love with the city 13 years ago. He is proud and excited to call the city his new home. Coseglia's return to Piccolo Spoleto is a long awaited and exciting theatrical reunion.

Trustus to Present VISTA QUEEN 15: THE YEAR OF CRYSTAL Pageant, 5/20

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the annual Vista Queen pageant returns to the Trustus Mainstage - and this year, it's the year of crystal. Join us this year for yet another group of crazy contestants who put on heels, wigs and make-up as they try to strut the stage and, at the same time, "feel like a natural woman." The annual event takes place Monday, May 20. Doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 7 pm.

Trustus Theatre Managing Director and Vista Queen founder Larry Hembree calls the event "even more surreal than some of the strangest legitimate theatre Trustus produces." He continues, "Kudos to these brave men. This is the best blackmail material ever available."

The current Vista Queen title is held by Gerald Floyd with former winners including Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and Senator Jake Knotts. This year's contestants are Tyler Ryan (WACH-Fox host,) Billy Guess (Tapp's Arts Center Assistant Director,) Tim Goldman (Trustus Board Member and Arts Advocate,) Daryl Byrd (Trustus Company Member and Arts Educator,) Richard Burts (701 Whaley and Historic Preservationist) and Otis Taylor (The State Arts Editor).

Emcees for the event are Terrance Henderson and Walter Graham with special appearances by Patti O'Furniture and Paris Le Faris. The production coordinator is Clay Owens.

Tickets are 40.00 each and can be purchased online at www.trustus.org. There is a cash bar and hor's doeuvres.

The contestants are scored 40% by the judges and 60% by the amount of money each contestant raises before and during the pageant. Each contestant competes in onstage personality, talent and an onstage question segment. This year's judges are Rosie Craig, Debbie McDaniel, Bambi Gaddist, John Sherrer, Anderson Burns, Jodi Salter, Kay Fogle and Michaela Piler Brown.

Trustus Theatre Brings COLLECTED STORIES to Columbia Museum of Art, Now thru 5/19

Trustus Theatre concludes its 2013 Off-Off-Lady series next month when it presents Collected Stories, directed by Milena Herring, at the Columbia Museum of Art. Collected Stories opens tonight, May 15 and runs through May 19, 2013.

Collected Stories, by Donald Margulies, is a provocative and topical play which received its Broadway premiere in 2010. The Trustus production of Collected Stories runs May 15 - 19, and is set in a small Greenwich Village apartment over six years. The production, which stars acclaimed Trustus Company Members Elena Martinez-Vidal as Ruth and Elizabeth Gray Engle as Lisa, is directed by Herring, who has returned to her native Columbia after nearly 30 years in New York.

"While centered around the developing relationship between two women, the story is actually about who owns your memories," said Herring, who acted and directed in New York for more than 15 years. "The idea of intellectual property rights isn't necessarily provocative," Herring said. "But as the audience eavesdrops on the six-year evolving relationship between these women, I think viewers might change their minds."

The story features Ruth Steiner, a respected short-story writer and professor in her mid-fifties, who has carved out a comfortable life for herself in a Greenwich Village apartment she has occupied for decades. Lisa Morrison is a callow yet talented 26-year-old graduate student and aspiring writer, a child of suburban privilege, when she meets Ruth and offers to become her assistant. Over six years, as Ruth and Lisa's relationship evolves from mentor/protégé to loving friends to adversaries -- and ultimately disintegrates --the story touches on issues of age, artistic license, and betrayal with humor and pathos.

Herring previously was the artistic director of Leap Productions in New York. Among the Off-Broadway shows she directed there were Eleemosynary by Lee Blessing, Sight Unseen by Donald Margulies, A Cowboy's Dream by John Foley, Painting Churches by Tina Howe, Oil City Symphony by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick, and Smoke on the Mountain by Mark Hardwick and Connie Ray, to name just a few.

Though Herring is making her Trustus directorial debut, her roots in Columbia theatre are deep. The eldest daughter of the late actress, director and drama teacher, Bette Herring, she cut her teeth at Town Theatre under the tutelage of the beloved children's theatre director Mary Lou Kramer. She is a graduate of the USC Theatre department.

Sam LaFrage and Martha Hearn to Teach Advanced Workshops at CCT, June 2013

New York actors Sam LaFrage and Martha Hearn will return to Columbia in June to teach workshops in Advanced Acting and Improvisation for the Actor at Columbia Children's Theatre. Mr. LaFrage's Advanced Acting Workshop will run from June 3 - 14 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Ms. Hearn's Improvisation for the Actor will run from June 3 - 7 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. Taught by Columbia native and Chicago and New York actor and improviser Martha Hearn, Improvisation for the Actor will take young performers through the basics of creating short and long form improvisational scenes. Often described as "using one's imagination without any preparation," the art of "improv" is as old as performance itself. Historically used in actor training and as a rehearsal tool, more recently improvisation has become recognized as an art form unto its own in which the dialogue, the action, the story and the characters are created collaboratively by The Players as the improvisation unfolds. Such television series as Saturday Night Live, Whose Line is it Anyway, and Mad TV all have their roots in improvisational comedy. Using techniques developed by Chicago's Second City, the workshop begins the process of teaching young actors how to work together responsively to define the parameters and action of a scene, in a process of co-creation. Often building scenes around audience suggestions, the actors learn to create environment, character, plot, conflict and resolution all while thinking on their feet.

Building on last summer's highly successful Advanced Acting Workshop taught by New York actor/director Sam LaFrage, this two week intensive training workshop is designed for the serious actor and closely follows much of the curriculum of The American Academy of Dramatic Art. (You do not have to have taken last year's workshop to register for this. A thorough review will take place at the beginning of the class.) This session will further explore and expand on The Meisner Technique, yoga, Viewpoints (Anne Bogart), and even the ever popular breath work (Jerzi Grotowski). The aim of this workshop is to free the actor and broaden his/her awareness. Through different acting exercises and movement work, the class will build on what it means to be living truthfully in the moment on stage. There is a world of difference between the actor who is caused authentically to do what his character must do and the actor who only indicates or self-generates his actions/emotions. This second session will also introduce the emotional prep, and will touch on monologue selection and how to build a successful resume. Students will need to present a one minute memorized monologue on the first day of class.

About the Instructors:

Martha Hearn is a New York- based improviser, educator and writer. She currently performs with Upright Citizens Brigade and recently completed the Second City Conservatory in Chicago and the UCB improv program in NY (and served as an intern at both theatres). A graduate of the SC Governor's School for the Arts and USC's Honors College, she is now earning her masters in Educational Theatre at City College of New York. Martha has performed improv at Comedy Sportz, Annoyance, Chemically Imbalanced Comedy, pH productions (all Chicago), People's Improv Theatre (NYC) Out of Bounds Festival (Austin), Toronto Improv Festival, Chicago's Sketchfest, and Del Close Marathon (NYC). She starred in the short improvised film "As We Go Along" which was accepted into the Cannes Film Festival's student series. Martha can sing all the counties of SC in alphabetical order to the tune of Yankee Doodle. And yes, she'll sing it if you ask nicely.

Sam LaFrage, a native of Camden, SC and a graduate of The Palmetto Center for the Arts is a 2012 graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, and was selected as a member of the 2013 New York Academy Company where he recently completed a year of Off Broadway work and a showcase that was hosted by two-time Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole. His Off-Broadway credits include "Palm Tree in a Rose Garden" (Jim Strong), "Happy in the Poorhouse" (Stevie), "The Rivals" (Bob Acres), and "Improbable Fiction" (Brevis). Other NYC credits include: "Blithe Spirit" (Charles). "The Wake of Jamey Foster" (Wayne), "Am I Blue?"(John Polk), "The Bear" (Smirnov), "The Loveliest Afternoon of the Year" (He), among others. Sam has worked alongside of and collaborated with George Heslin (Founder of the Origin Theatre Company, NYC), director/playwright Derek Ahonen (Founder of The Amoralists Theatre Company, NYC), Barbara Rubin (Market Theatre in Joannesburg, South Africa) and Denis Reid (Yale School of Drama). Last season Sam wrote and directed our highly-acclaimed audience favorite "The Commedia Cinderella" and directed the CCT YouTheatre production of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." In addition to teaching the Advanced Acting Workshop, this summer Sam will also be writing, directing and starring in "The Commedia Rapunzel."

Theatre Ventures have just announced that the first North American tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's new stage adaptation of THE WIZARD OF OZ will commence on September 10, 2013 at The Smith Center in Las Vegas, NV.

THE WIZARD OF OZ had its North American premiere on December 20, 2012 in Toronto, ON, at the Ed Mirvish Theatre, where it continues to play through August 18, 2013.

Starring Danielle Wade as Dorothy, who was chosen by the Canadian public through CBC TV's reality show "Over The Rainbow," THE WIZARD OF OZ is an enchanting adaptation of the all-time classic, adapted and reconceived for the stage by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams.

Developed from the ever popular MGM screenplay, this new production contains all the beloved Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg songs from the Oscar-winning movie score, all the favorite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way, including new songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!
