SOUND AND BEAUTY to Open at Kumu Kahua Theatre, 5/30

Kumu Kahua Theatre finishes is 42nd season with the Hawai`i premiere of David Henry Hwang's Sound and Beauty, two haunting one-act plays performed together in one evening of theatre.

In 'The Sound of a Voice,' a samurai encounters a mysterious woman in a lonely cottage, and begins to suspect her powers are not of this world. In 'The House of Sleeping Beauties,' a modern-day writer seeks out an exclusive brothel where the girls all share a haunting trait.

'Sound and Beauty' was first performed off-Broadway in 1983. Playwright Hwang is the Tony Award-winning author of M. Butterfly and Chinglish.

Show Dates: Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.: May 30, 31; June 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29; and Sundays at 2 p.m.: June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30.

?Kumu Kahua Theatre finishes is 42nd season with the Hawai`i premiere of David Henry Hwang's Sound and Beauty, two haunting one-act plays performed together in one evening of theatre.

'Sound and Beauty' was first performed off-Broadway in 1983. Playwright Hwang is the Tony Award-winning author of M. Butterfly and Chinglish.

David Henry Hwang is the only Asian American playwright to have plays produced on Broadway. His scripts often deal with subject matter reflecting the Asian experience in the west and Asian themes in American theatre.

Based on Neil Simon's well-known film, the musical tells the story of an unlikely romance between Paula, a vulnerable, single mother, and Elliot, the opinionated actor who shows up on her doorstep with a lease to sublet her apartment. While attempting to cohabit as peacefully as possible, and despite their differences of opinion and temperament, Elliot and Paula fall in love. This turn of events alarms Paula's daughter, Lucy, who is scared that Elliot, like all of Paula's boyfriends, will dump her mother.

Playing "Paula McFadden," an ex-Broadway dancer who is unlucky in love, is Tricia Marciel. She is joined by Pedro Haro who plays "Elliot Garfield," the actor who just moved to New York, and Stephanie Zaharis, who plays "Lucy McFadden," Paula's precocious 12 year-old daughter.

Kumu Kahua Theatre to Host KALA-BASH Fundraiser and Silent Auction, 7/6

The Kumu Kahua Theatre annual Kala-Bash Fundraiser and Silent Auction will be held on July 6, 2013 from 5pm-9pm at 46 Merchant Street, in the theatre and on the lanai and courtyard.

This fundraiser includes live music and entertainment, food from popular Honolulu restaurants and a silent auction featuring items ranging from home décor and jewelry to round trip flights to many continental United States cities.

Musical entertainment will include Hiyah Fire, Sean Cleland and Beauty and the Beast, featuring Stephanie Keiko Kong.

Participating restaurants and companies include: Brasserie Du Vin, The Chart House, Ige's Restaurant and 19th Puka, Murphy's Bar & Grill, Side Street Inn, Alaskan Air, Tiffany and Co., Dukes Waikiki, Kahala Hotel and Resort and Paul Brown Salon and Spa.

In addition to the food, beverage, entertainment and silent auction, guided architectural tours of the area will be offered throughout the evening. Kumu Kahua Theatre is located in the King Kamehameha V Post Office building and is surrounded by notable structures in Downtown Honolulu.

Admission is limited to 250 persons for this event, which sold out last year.

This event is an opportunity to celebrate and support the only theatre dedicated to producing plays written by our local playwrights and about our local culture. Over the past 42 years, its artists have entertained and educated more than 73,000 people, and produced more than 200 plays.

2013 Maoli Film Festival Comes to Kumu Kahua Theatre Today

In honor of the eighth annual MAMo: Maoli Arts Month, Kumu Kahua Theatre and Pacific Islanders in Communications bring you the third annual Maoli Film Festival at Kumu Kahua Theatre.

Using the medium of film to share the Hawaiian tradition of storytelling, this film festival presents authentic Hawaiian voice. The Maoli Film Festival gives center stage to Hawaiian filmmakers and films about Hawaiians.

The festival will begin on Saturday afternoon with a program of shorts and continue through two evenings of independent films, produced by Hawaiian filmmakers and artists. The films presented will include: Kae, by Lana Dang; Nani Ke Kalo by Aina Paikai, Let's Play Music!: Slack Key with Cyril Pahinui & Friends by ??iwi TV; Waikiki, Riding the Waves of Change by Fran Palama and Kalo Culture by Kamuela Vance.

The festival will take place today, May 4 and 5, 2013; Saturday 4:00-10:00; Sunday 3:00-7:00 PM. See the website www.kumukahua.org for information as the film schedule develops. Films will be shown in separate "seatings," each including one feature length film or several shorts. There will be up to three seatings on both Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Maoli Arts Month was developed by the Pa'i Foundation and the Bishop Museum to give Maoli Artists opportunities to show their work.

Established in 1991, the mission of Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) is to support, advance, and develop Pacific Island media content and talent that results in a deeper understanding of Pacific Island history, culture and contemporary challenges.

THE PRISONER OF SECOND AVE Opens Tonight at ProArts Playhouse in Kihei

ProArts presents Neil Simon's "The Prisoner of Second Avenue" as the second show of their Spring season.

It's 1971. Mel Edison is a well-paid executive of a high-end Manhattan firm, which has suddenly hit the skids, and he gets the ax. His wife, Edna, takes a job to tide them over, then she too is sacked. Compounded by the air-pollution killing his plants, and with the walls of the apartment being paper-thin, allowing him a constant ear full of his neighbors private lives, things can't seem to get any worse. Then he's robbed, and his psychiatrist dies with $23,000 of his money. Mel does the only thing left for him to do-he has a nervous breakdown and it's the best thing that ever happened to him. It is now up to the loving care of his brother Harry, his sisters and Edna to bring Mel back to a firm reality.

"The Prisoner of Second Avenue" features the best of Maui talent including John Peterson as the long-suffering Mel; Jennifer Rose as his devoted wife, Edna; Lee Garrow as his older brother, Harry; and Marilynn Hirashima, Beth Garrow and Barbara Sedano as his loving by slightly confused sisters.

The show is directed by Kristi Scott, with costumes designed by Sarah Loney, scenery created by Caro Walker and lighting provided by Bonnie Prucha. ProArts productions are produced by Jonathan Lehman.

Opening night is tonight, May 3 and the show runs until May 19. It plays Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3:00 pm (no show on 5/5). ProArts offers reserved seats at $20.00. Kama'ina nights, with discounts for Hawaii residents, are scheduled for Saturday, May 4, and Thursdays, May 9 and 16.

The intimate ProArts Playhouse is located at the Azeka (Makai) Shopping Center, 1280 S. Kihei Rd. in Kihei, Maui. The Playhouse is air conditioned with 82 reserved seats. There is free parking, plenty of nearby restaurants, and an art gallery inside currently featuring the works of Pat Masumoto and Caro Walker.

Based on Studs Terkel's best-selling book of interviews with American Workers, WORKING paints a vivid portrait of the men and women the world so often takes for granted: the schoolteacher, the phone operator, the waitress, the millworker, the mason, and the housewife, just to name a few.This new 2010 version of WORKING is a musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life. While most of the professions have been updated, the strength of the show is in the core truths that transcend specific professions; the key is how people's relationships to their work ultimately reveal key aspects of their humanity, regardless of the trappings of the job itself. The show, still set in contemporary America, contains timeless truths. This new version of WORKING allows the audience to get a rare glimpse of the actors and technicians working to put on a show. This raw adaptation only enhances the realistic and relatable nature of the subject matter.With extremely modest set and orchestra requirements, universal subject matter, and featuring a multi-ethnic ensemble cast of variable size, WORKING is one of the most accessible, relevant and substantive musicals ever created.
