Well known children's poems spring to life when The Crabgrass Puppet theatre brings their delightful show, Haiku, HipHop and Hotdogs to The Public Theatre today, May 19th at 2pm, with additional school day morning matinees May 20-22. Perfect for families and children pre-K through fifth grade, this production is a fun way to introduce a child to the magic of theatre, at the affordable price of only $5 a ticket for children 18 and under, and just $10 for adults.

Thrill to the adventures of Fearless Flying Hotdogs! Dance with the Funky Snowman! Watch as The Goblin overcomes his fear and makes friends with the terrifying boy on top of his bed! Crabgrass Puppet Theatre's exciting new fusion of poetry and puppetry includes poems by Jack Prelutsky, David McCord, CaleF Brown, Beatrice Schenk de Regniers, and others.

Haiku, Hip Hop and Hotdogs is a seamless tapestry of puppetry and poetry, performed by hot-dog vendors from a hot-dog cart that turns into a puppet stage. This isn't puppets reciting poetry! This show creates the world of the poem, the action of the poem, the emotion of the poem, blending the best of poetry and puppet theater. The poems in performance range from gentle strokes of the imagination - to wacky hilarity - to magical whimsy - to a rousing musical finale! Co-creator Bonny Hall says, "Puppetry is a terrific medium to arouse a child's interest in poetry.

Bonny Hall also says, "The best poetry has the power to create pictures in our heads . . . to make us feel emotion . . . to make us laugh and cry. It's a small step from watching puppeteers bring a poem to life to wanting to read that poem . . . and then wanting to read more, and more and more."

The Crabgrass Puppet Theatre has been delighting audiences across the nation with their whimsical humor and puppetry since 1982. Their Popular Productions of Jabberwocky and Anansi:Spiderman of Africa have also been previously performed at The Public Theatre. This acclaimed Puppet Theatre has been awarded two Citations of Excellence from UNIMA-USA, the highest puppetry award in the United States.

THE RAT PACK IS BACK to Run at Ogunquit Playhouse, 5/22-6/8

Straight from Las Vegas comes the award winning tribute show, The Rat Pack is Back, live on The Ogunquit Playhouse stage May 22 to June 8. The dynamic show has all the swing and swagger of the original Rat Pack, and recreates the days when this cool lounge act was the hottest show on the Las Vegas strip. Audiences will be transported to the Sands Hotel's famed Copa Room, brought to life with a talented cast that honors the legendary Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin and Joey Bishop. Combining side-splitting comedy with pitch-perfect music, and a twelve-piece swing orchestra on stage, the show highlights classic songs like "Fly Me To The Moon," "New York, New York" and "That's Amore," as only Frank, Sammy and Dean can perform them.

Appearing as Frank Sinatra is Brian Duprey, who got his start on FOX TV's "Performing As," where he won the top prize by portraying his idol, Frank Sinatra. Since then he has appeared in Las Vegas and performing arts theaters across the U.S. and is considered to be the number one Frank Sinatra performer in the world. Dean Martin is portrayed by Drew Anthony who has established himself as one of the finest jazz singers in the New York area. He has performed hit musical shows at famed venues including Danny's Skylight Room Cabaret and Jazz Spot in New York City, Yale University's Sprague Memorial Hall, and the famous Shubert Theater. Kyle Diamond joins the cast as Sammy Davis Jr. Mr. Diamond has performed in bands throughout the U.S. and is a regular performer at numerous Las Vegas casinos. Rounding out the "Pack" is Mickey Joseph who plays Joey Bishop. Mr. Joseph is a stand-up comedian who has worked in the hottest Comedy Clubs on the west coast and in Las Vegas, and has performed with many comedians on the circuit, including Ellen Degeneres, Drew Carey, Richard Lewis and Robin Williams.

The Rat Pack is Back is directed by Robbie Howard. Mr. Howard hails from L.A. and has enjoyed a long career in theater and television. He has also worked as writer and director for many corporate clients, as well as for television shows such as, "General Hospital," "Growing Pains," and "Perfect Strangers," and the prestigious comedy night club Crackers in California.

Lon Bronson will lead the "Pack" as the Musical Director. Mr. Bronson is a musical director, conductor, arranger, producer and technical director for national television, headline performers, production shows and for large scale corporate events and award presentations. He has brought his high-energy, world-class music to Las Vegas on a weekly basis since 1990, holding the record for the longest running band in Las Vegas history. Mr. Bronson has been nominated for an Emmy Award for Musical Direction for the TBS production of "Earth to America," which starred Tom Hanks, Faith Hill, Dustin Hoffman and Bill Maher. Bombastic Vern, superstitious Patsy, and ditsy, man-crazy Honey are addicted to Bingo! And no little hurricane is going to keep these die-hard players from their weekly game. Tonight is also the yearly celebration of the birth of Bingo and a tribute to its founder, Edwin S. Lowe. When the storm knocks out power at the Bingo Hall, Patsy and Honey remind each other of an ominous night fifteen years ago that began in the same way. In flashback, Honey tells us about the night Vern and her best friend, Bernice, had their falling out. Predictably, Bernice's sweet, yet headstrong daughter, Alison, enters the Bingo hall in disguise - Bernice's health is failing, and Alison is determined, with the help of Bingo, to reunite her mother with her long-lost best friend, Vern. With a smart, funny script and a bouncy, hummable score Bingo turns Grandma's favorite form of gambling into fun-loving musical theater. Eight-year-old Lucy and her goofy pal Little Chucky are searching for buried treasure, but a gang of bumbling pirates keeps getting in the way! The kids get some help from their new ocean-dwelling friends, including enthusiastic superhero Lobster Boy, his reluctant sidekick Crabby, and an overgrown sea monkey.

Everybody Loves Pirates features 15 hand-crafted puppets, and an 8 foot pirate ship!

Now one of the most performed shows in America, SEUSSICAL is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFF, MY FAVORITE YEAR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. "Oh, the Thinks You Will Think" as the spirit of imagination transports the colorful characters from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.For this version, certain plot elements have been simplified, it is in one act, and runs approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes - perfect for presentation in schools. (See ADDITIONAL FACTS below for details) The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Penobscot Theatre Presents AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, 5/15-6/2

Hold onto your seats! It's the original Amazing Race! Penobscot Theatre Company wraps up its 39th Season with Jules Verne's visionary, timeless adventure, Around the World in 80 Days. This high-spirited, fast-moving, highly imaginative production plays at the historic Bangor Opera House from May 15th - June 2.

The pressure's on and time is running out! It's 1872 and the unflappable Phileas Fogg wagers that he can circle the globe and race from London, around the world, and back to London, in a mere 80 days! At Fogg's side: a band of quirky adventurers. At their heels: a relentless Scotland Yard detective! At stake: surviving utterly fantastic adventures across India, China, Japan and America - beating the clock - and winning the bet!

Jules Verne meets Monty Python in this madcap odyssey perfect for the entire family. Described by The New York Times as "smart enough to make sophisticated adults laugh out loud and shamelessly silly enough to keep children interested and entertained," Penobscot Theatre will give one complimentary youth ticket for kids 18 and under, for every $36 ticket purchased. "We really want to pack the house with families," says Artistic Director, Bari Newport, "We want people of all ages to know they are welcome at PTC."

Kate Warner directs this unabashedly theatrical production. Theatre-savvy audiences may be familiar with Kate's work as Artistic Director of the improv-based, Dad's Garage Theatre Company in Atlanta and Artistic Director of New Repertory Theatre in Boston. "It's the best kind of rehearsal when you get to say to the cast, "Thursday we'll work on the train stunts and Friday we'll do the elephant," laughs, Warner.
The five actors who embark on the extraordinary itinerary and global race against the clock, play 39 different characters. Dominick Varney (Annie), Arthur Morison (Last Gas), Brad LaBree (Becky's New Car) and Jenny Hart (Boeing-Boeing) support popular Atlanta based actor Robin Bloodworth, in his first PTC production.

Incidentally, Robin is on his own amazing adventure. He is on a quest to perform at a theatre in every state of the union. "I have thirteen to go!" says Robin.

The design team for Around the World in 80 Days includes set design by Erik Diaz (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change), lighting design by Wayne Merrit (Becky's New Car), costume design by Rebecca Wright (Annie), properties design by Meredith Perry (Wit) and sound design by Brandie Rita (The Sugar Bean Sisters).

DREAMGIRLS
June 5 - 22, 2013

The curtain goes up June 5 with the Tony Award winning, Dreamgirls, with one of the most stirring, dynamic, emotional scores ever written for the stage, brimming in R&B, soul, and pop music. With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, Dreamgirls tells the explosive behind-the-scenes story of a young female rhythm and blues trio from Chicago called "The Dreams", who climb the turbulent ladder of the Motown music business to become singing superstars. Dreamgirls is based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Chiffons, and that Motown sound which became a cultural icon amid a crucial period of transition in music and culture. Director and choreographer Marc Robin returns to MSMT to stage the sordid backstage manipulations and sensational score and effectively re?creates the black musical styles of the 1960s and turns it all into a dazzling piece of entertainment. LES MISERABLES

Back by popular demand after a sell-out 2008 run, Les Miserables will attack the Maine State Music Theatre June 26th through July 13th. Based on a novel by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables tells the musical tale of redemption and revolution in early 19th-century France. Ex-convict, Jean Valjean (known by his prison number, 24601), becomes a force for good in the world, but cannot escape his dark past as he tries to save himself and those around him. The award-winning score composed by Claude-Michel Schonberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and a book by Alain Boublil will feature such memorable musical numbers as On My Own, I Dreamed a Dream, Do You Hear the People Sing and the show-stopping, Bring Him Home. Everything's coming up roses July 17, as Maine State Music Theatre continues its 55th season of professional musical theater with the smash musical fable, Gypsy. Loosely based on the memoirs of striptease artist, Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy follows the dreams and disappointments of Mama Rose and her fight to raise her two daughters, Dainty June and Louise, in the world of 1920's show business, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. Maine State Music Theatre favorite, Charis Leos, returns to the stage as Rose, "the ultimate show business mother" in what critics have referred to as the greatest American musical with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents. MARY POPPINS
August 7 - 24, 2013

Maine State Music Theatre brings the 55th season of professional musical theater to a close with Disney's family favorite, Mary Poppins, which flies into the Pickard Theater August 7. Based on the P. L. Travers children's books and the 1964 Disney film of the same name, anything can and will happen at Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane when the perfect nanny, Mary Poppins, takes charge of the Banks family. Mary Poppins features the film's familiar music and lyrics by the Academy Award winning Sherman Brothers, along with additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The young and young-at-heart will leave the theater singing such songs as Chim Chim Cher-ee, A Spoonful of Sugar, Feed the Birds and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
