Public Theatre Presents HAIKU, HIP HOP AND HOTDOGS, Now thru 5/22

Well known children's poems spring to life when The Crabgrass Puppet theatre brings their delightful show, Haiku, HipHop and Hotdogs to The Public Theatre today, May 19th at 2pm, with additional school day morning matinees May 20-22. Perfect for families and children pre-K through fifth grade, this production is a fun way to introduce a child to the magic of theatre, at the affordable price of only $5 a ticket for children 18 and under, and just $10 for adults.

Thrill to the adventures of Fearless Flying Hotdogs! Dance with the Funky Snowman! Watch as The Goblin overcomes his fear and makes friends with the terrifying boy on top of his bed! Crabgrass Puppet Theatre's exciting new fusion of poetry and puppetry includes poems by Jack Prelutsky, David McCord, CaleF Brown, Beatrice Schenk de Regniers, and others.

Haiku, Hip Hop and Hotdogs is a seamless tapestry of puppetry and poetry, performed by hot-dog vendors from a hot-dog cart that turns into a puppet stage. This isn't puppets reciting poetry! This show creates the world of the poem, the action of the poem, the emotion of the poem, blending the best of poetry and puppet theater. The poems in performance range from gentle strokes of the imagination - to wacky hilarity - to magical whimsy - to a rousing musical finale! Co-creator Bonny Hall says, "Puppetry is a terrific medium to arouse a child's interest in poetry.

Bonny Hall also says, "The best poetry has the power to create pictures in our heads . . . to make us feel emotion . . . to make us laugh and cry. It's a small step from watching puppeteers bring a poem to life to wanting to read that poem . . . and then wanting to read more, and more and more."

The Crabgrass Puppet Theatre has been delighting audiences across the nation with their whimsical humor and puppetry since 1982. Their Popular Productions of Jabberwocky and Anansi:Spiderman of Africa have also been previously performed at The Public Theatre. Now one of the most performed shows in America, SEUSSICAL is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFF, MY FAVORITE YEAR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. "Oh, the Thinks You Will Think" as the spirit of imagination transports the colorful characters from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. For this version, certain plot elements have been simplified, it is in one act, and runs approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes - perfect for presentation in schools. (See ADDITIONAL FACTS below for details) The story centers around Horton the Elephant, who finds himself faced with a double challenge--not only must he protect his tiny friend Jojo (and all the invisible Whos) from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him, the only one who recognizes "his kind and his powerful heart." Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community are challenged and emerge triumphant, in a story that makes you laugh and cry. Winner of the Tony "Triple Crown" for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, AVENUE Q is part flesh, part felt and packed with heart. AVENUE Q SCHOOL EDITION is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it's clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.Because the original AVENUE Q has some content elements that have previously made it a difficult choice for some high school productions, MTI has worked with the AVENUE Q authors to create an adaptation that maintains the dramatic intention and integrity of the piece, while editing it to make it more appropriate for high school audiences and performers.

The Brothers Grimm "go Broadway" as Sondheim and Lapine offer up a cockeyed fairy tale where all of your favorite characters""Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk) and The Witch""meet and interact on their journeys. With unforgettable roles, little dancing and no chorus, INTO THE WOODS JR. showcases a medium-sized ensemble of talented singers and actors. The sophisticated score has been adapted to make it easier--though still challenging--for young performers. INTO THE WOODS JR. is a funny and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they've grown up and the ethical issues raised therein.

Public Theatre to Present HAIKU, HIP HOP AND HOTDOGS, 5/19-22

Well known children's poems spring to life when The Crabgrass Puppet theatre brings their delightful show, Haiku, HipHop and Hotdogs to The Public Theatre on Sunday May 19th at 2pm, with additional school day morning matinees May 20-22.

This acclaimed Puppet Theatre has been awarded two Citations of Excellence from UNIMA-USA, the highest puppetry award in the United States.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, having set the standards and established the rules of musical theatre still being followed today. Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!Music by Rodgers, Richard; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Original Dances by Agnes De Mille; Based on the play `Green Grow the Lilacs` by Lynn Riggs

Even surrounded by dozens of toys, Milo is bored. Nothing interests him at all. The Demons of Ignorance are certain he will be their next victim, telling him "If you get the urge to do anything - don't. It could be dangerous." To the rescue comes THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH JR.! Norton Juster's beloved children's book is given full musical treatment in this acclaimed stage version of the modern tale of a boy who must save the princesses Rhyme and Reason and reunite the brother Kings who rule over the cities of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis. Aided by a trusty time-keeping dog, Tock, Milo successfully brings harmony to the Land of Wisdom and learns many things about words and numbers along his journey. Perhaps the most important lesson he takes with him, however, is that everything we learn has a purpose and whatever we do affects everything and everyone. When he returns home, he realizes there is never a reason to be bored in a world full of so many things to discover. With a book adapted by Mr. Juster himself, witty lyrics full of wordplay by Sheldon Harnick (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, SHE LOVES ME) and a melodious score by Arnold Black, THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH JR. is an endearing show that audiences of all ages will find appealing.SPECIAL EDITIONS OF THE NOVEL NOW AVAILABLE To celebrate the 50th Anniversary milestone, Random House has released two special editions of the book as well as a new work by Norton Juster.

Maine State Music Theatre has announced its 55th Season:

DREAMGIRLS
June 5 - 22, 2013

The curtain goes up June 5 with the Tony Award winning, Dreamgirls, with one of the most stirring, dynamic, emotional scores ever written for the stage, brimming in R&B, soul, and pop music. With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, Dreamgirls tells the explosive behind-the-scenes story of a young female rhythm and blues trio from Chicago called "The Dreams", who climb the turbulent ladder of the Motown music business to become singing superstars. Dreamgirls is based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, The Marvelettes, The Chiffons, and that Motown sound which became a cultural icon amid a crucial period of transition in music and culture. Director and choreographer Marc Robin returns to MSMT to stage the sordid backstage manipulations and sensational score and effectively re?creates the black musical styles of the 1960s and turns it all into a dazzling piece of entertainment. Musical numbers include I Am Changing, One Night Only, Family and the show-stopping, And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going. Don't miss this exciting, sparkling musical experience, featuring a multi-talented cast of professional performers from New York City and around the country.

LES MISERABLES
June 26 - July 13, 2013

Back by popular demand after a sell-out 2008 run, Les Miserables will attack the Maine State Music Theatre June 26th through July 13th. Based on a novel by Victor Hugo, Les Miserables tells the musical tale of redemption and revolution in early 19th-century France. Ex-convict, Jean Valjean (known by his prison number, 24601), becomes a force for good in the world, but cannot escape his dark past as he tries to save himself and those around him. The award-winning score composed by Claude-Michel Schonberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and a book by Alain Boublil will feature such memorable musical numbers as On My Own, I Dreamed a Dream, Do You Hear the People Sing and the show-stopping, Bring Him Home. Don't miss this exciting, passionate musical experience, featuring a multi-talented cast of professional performers from New York City and around the country including MSMT favorites Gregg Goodbrod and Curt Dale Clark as rivals, Jean Valjean and Javert.

GYPSY
