Heidi Blickenstaff to Lead NEXT TO NORMAL at Weston Playhouse, 7/11-27

BroadwayWorld has confirmed that Broadway veteran Heidi Blickenstaff will lead Vermont's award-winning Weston Playhouse Theatre Company production of Next to Normal. Blickenstaff will play 'Diana' in the show, which is set to run July 11-27, and will be directed by Michael Berresse.

Blickenstaff's Broadway credits include: The Little Mermaid (OBC, Ursula), [title of show], The Full Monty (Susan Hershey, u/s Vicki Nichols). Off-Broadway: [title of show] (Heidi) at the Vineyard. NYMF: 2004 [title of show] (Stacia), 2005 The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde (Blanche Barrow). Regional: In 2008, Heidi was honored with the Helen Hayes Award for her work as Ann Mitchell in Meet John Doe at Ford's Theatre. Also, The Girl in the Frame (Laney) at Goodspeed's Norma Terris Theatre; Bat Boy: The Musical (MerEdith Parker) at Theatreworks in Palo Alto (Bay Area premiere); and Prairie (Caroline Ingalls), directed by Francesca Zambello at New York Stage and Film (world premiere). Tours: The Full Monty (Vicki Nichols), Jekyll & Hyde, Steel Pier, The Who's Tommy (u/s Mrs. Walker) and Dreamgirls. Heidi is also a part of the voiceover cast for the PBS kids series, Word World. She is a graduate of Duke University.

Next To Normal took Broadway by storm in a 2009 production directed by Rent's Michael Greif. In this Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical, a suburban family struggles with life's many challenges, striving to be just "next to normal." Their victory is as inspiring as the score is unforgettable. With book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt, Next to Normal garnered eleven Tony Award nominations.

Brian Anthony Wilson, Tim Daly and More Set for DTF's Upcoming Season

A host of Broadway talent as well as several film and television stars will be appearing on the Dorset Theatre Festival stage this summer. Tim Daly, well known for his work on Wings (NBC) and Private Practice (ABC) will headline in the first production of the season, Theresa Rebeck's The Scene. Joining him will be Geoffrey Arend (ABC's Body of Proof) and well-known NY stage actress Mary Bacon (most recently seen in the Michael John LaChiusa/Sybille Pearson musical Giant as well as on Bway in Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll). They will be joined by newcomer Carolyn Holding (The Philadelphia Story/Chautauqua). Adrienne Campbell-Holt will direct the production.

The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez, directed by DTF Artistic Director Dina Janis, will follow and will star Brian Anthony Wilson, well known for his work on HBO's The Wire as well as featured film roles in Rounders (with Ed Norton) and Keeping the Faith(with Ben Stiller). Brian's costars will be Jaime Lincoln Smith (Ruined & Holla if Ya Hear Me) and Michael Simpson (The Glass Menagerie/Old Globe).

Jenn Thompson, TACT's Co-Artistic Director, will direct the DTF revival of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park with a great comic cast that includes Amelia White (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Geoffrey Wade (An American Daughter), Tony Roach ( Rich Girl), Lesley Shires (Happy Birthday), Evan Thompson (Ivanov, An American Daughter) and Tom Ferguson (Anyone Can Whistle-DPI).

Concluding the Mainstage Season will be the Regional Premiere of Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, directed by Giovanna Sardelli. This production is a Co-Production with Barrington Stage under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd, TriStan Wilson Managing Director. The cast for this Pulitzer Prize winning play will include Remi Sandri (The North Pool), Carol Halstead (The Best Man), Clea Alsip (The Show Off, The Killing of Sister George), Andy Lucien (The Last Seder), Lynnette Freeman (A Raisin in the Sun -Trinity Rep), Greg Jackson (Timon of Athens - NJ Shakespeare) and Kevin Crouch (Two Gentlemen/Tahoe Shakespeare).

DTF will also be presenting three New Play Readings as part of their New Play Development Program, the first of which will be Adam Rapp's The Purple Lights of Joppa Illinois starring Paul Sparks (Boardwalk Empire), Connor Barrett (The Metal Children), and newcomers Zoe Van Tieghem (The Last Keepers) and Christina Lorenn Elmore. Opera Company of Middlebury Presents Tchaikovsky's EUGENE ONEGIN

The company started in an unfinished building with a 90-minute Carmen, using only four singers (all the company could afford), four musicians and a narrator. It was a very modest beginning for the Opera Company of Middlebury, which in ten years has grown into one of the region's major opera companies, presenting fully-staged professional productions in the intimate confines of Middlebury's Town Hall Theater.

"I think we've really arrived as a company," say artistic director Douglas Anderson. "Over 500 singers applied for our auditions this year, and we see our productions listed in the Opera News. There's a real buzz in the industry about this company that's doing such astonishing work in a little Vermont town."

For its tenth season OCM is staging Tchaikovsky's masterwork, Eugene Onegin. "It's the biggest production we've ever attempted," says Anderson. Baritone Darik Knutsen plays the title role, and Vermont soprano Suzanne Kantorski-Merrill is featured in the demanding role of Tatiana.

This is Kantorski-Merrill's third production with the company, having starred earlier in Puccini's La Bohème (2008) and Bizet's ThePearl Fishers (2010).

Maestro Emmanuel Plasson returns for his third year as music director. "The fact that this world-class conductor loves us and works with us is something we still find slightly unbelievable," says Anderson. "I was in New York just two weeks ago to see him conducting the New York City Opera, and he'd just returned from conducting at Covent Garden in London." Plasson loves Vermont, explains Anderson, and has a special affinity for OCM's creative productions and warm, supportive atmosphere. "He also loves our brilliant 21-piece orchestra, made up of the best musicians in Vermont," says Anderson.

Eugene Onegin will play five performances from May 31 through June 8 at Town Hall Theater. Dorset Theatre Festival, Northshire Bookstore and Bennington Museum Announce Joint Vermont Civil War Series

The Civil War has a deep history in southwestern Vermont. To commemorate many of the events and people associated with the 150thAnniversary of this period, Northshire Bookstore, Dorset Theatre Festival, and Bennington Museum have created a series of programs, events and exhibits that take place throughout the Shires of southwestern Vermont beginning on May 23 and continuing through October.

The Civil War in Vermont Series kicks off on May 23rd at 6 pm with a talk and discussion at Northshire Bookstore called The Meaning of Freedom. Seth Bongartz, Hildene Executive Director, discusses Lincoln's relationship with slaves and their pending freedom. Vermont Humanities historian Lars Nielsen talks about the Jews during the Civil War. Dina Janis, Artistic Director of the Dorset Theatre Festival, will moderate the Q & A that follows. The Dorset Theatre Festival production of the renowned Civil War drama, The Whipping Man, acts as the springboard for this discussion. This award-winning play follows the story of a Jewish Confederate soldier and two of his former slaves, who meet on Passover as the war ends and grapple with new definitions of freedom and what that means in the post-Civil War landscape.

The series continues with the opening of the Bennington Museum exhibit Southwestern Vermont and the Civil War running from May 25 - October 27. On June 30 at 3 pm, Northshire Bookstore hosts Howard Coffin in a special program called Something Abides: Discovering the Civil War in Today's Vermont. From July 11- 20, The Dorset Theatre Festival presents The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez. Related to this play, Bennington Museum offers a special program in collaboration with the DTF Design Team for The Whipping Man called Conjuring the Civil War: Recreating History. This takes place on July 13 at 2 pm at the museum. At 7 pm on September 6, the Northshire Bookstore hosts quilt historian Pam Weeks who offers a special program called Civil War Quilts. On exhibit from August 31 - October 14 at the Bennington Museum is the 150th Anniversary of the Jane Stickle Quilt featuring this world-renowned example of American Folk Art. The exhibit is complemented by a presentation and trunk show featuring Brenda Papadakis, noted authority on Jane Stickle and her quilt. This is scheduled for October 4 at 7 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6, join Brenda Papadakis at the Bennington Museum for special quilting workshops. Registration is required.

Drawing upon the deep history in the southwestern portion of Vermont, this collaborative series offers something for all interests. The Opera Company of Middlebury's MEET THE SINGERS Set for 5/19

The Opera Company of Middlebury, now in its 10th season, has become a popular stop for talented young opera singers on their way to great careers. But there's another big attraction.

"When these singers come to Middlebury they immediately feel as if they're part of the community," says OCM artistic director Douglas Anderson. "They make a lot of friends in the area, which is unusual, and one reason for that is Meet the Singers."

The annual Meet the Singers event will take place on Sunday, May 19, at 5 pm. This year, because of increased attendance, the event is being held at the Unitarian Universalist Society, just a few blocks from Town Hall Theater.

Fifteen professional singers will come to Middlebury this year to perform in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, which will be performed at Town Hall Theater from May 31-June 8. Several are returning from past seasons, including soprano Suzanne Kantorski-Merrill, who has starred in OCM's La Boheme and "The Pearl Fishers".

The event begins with the singers presenting their favorite arias. "These are thrilling voices singing some of opera's finest arias - with a little musical theater thrown in for good measure," says Anderson. "It's always a thrilling concert." After the recital the singers and the community mingle over drinks and hors d'oeuvres, and everyone truly gets to Meet the Singers.

"People really enjoy our opera productions," says Anderson, "but there's something really special about the experience when you know the people who are up on that stage. And we find that these relationships continue over time, as local people keep in touch and follow the careers of these exciting singers."

Meet the Singers will take place on Sunday, May 19, at the Unitarian Universalist Society, on Charles Avenue, near the Middlebury Union High School. The event begins at 5:00 pm. "We're rolling out a terrific lineup of shows and also some great new ways for Vermonters to take in the fun," says Weston's Managing Director Stuart Duke. "Live theatre should be for everyone. Our popular V-Tix program, started several years ago, is being expanded and improved this year to encourage more people to attend our performances."

The new V-Tix program promises a limited number of select seats to each MainStage performance priced at only $25.00. Similarly, some tickets to Weston's intimate OtherStages performance space at the Rod & Gun Club will be priced at just $15.00. "At these prices, we expect them to go quickly," says Duke. There are no restrictions on ordering, but the tickets must be ordered by phone at 802-824-5288.

In addition to the newly expanded V-Tix program, Weston has also announced that all of it's MainStage preview performances (typically the Thursday before the Friday opening of each new production at The Playhouse) will be priced at a flat $35.00. OtherStages previews will be priced at just $20.00.

Weston's 2013 MainStage season includes the British comedy, Educating Rita (June 25 - July 6), the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning rock musical, Next to Normal (July 11 - 27), the legendary Broadway musical 42nd Street (August 1 - 24) and, for the first time on the Weston stage, the beloved American masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird (August 29 - Sept. 11).

Two exciting new works will debut on Weston's OtherStages at the Weston Rod & Gun Club. Winner of Weston's New Musical Award, Loving Leo (July 18 - Aug. 4) is a touching musical portrait of what it means to be family. This Blessed Plot (Aug. 15 - Sept. 1) features Obie Award winner Marc Wolf in a smart, funny play about the battle for free Shakespeare in Central Park.

For kids, parents and grandparents, Weston's Young Company will perform Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day! (June 20 - July 7), also at the Rod & Gun Club.

The clashing sounds and pulsing rhythms of New York City underscore this landmark "concept" show, considered by many to have inaugurated the modern era of musical theatre. COMPANY follows our anti-hero bachelor Robert as he makes his way through a series of encounters with April (the stewardess), Kathy (the girl who's going to marry someone else), Marta (the "peculiar" one), as well as with his married friends. On the night of his 35th birthday, confirmed bachelor Robert Contemplates his unmarried state. In vignette after hilarious vignette, we are introduced to "those good and crazy people," his married friends, as Robert weighs the pros and cons of married life. In the end, he realizes being alone is "alone, not alive."An honest, witty, sophisticated look at relationships, COMPANY is as contemporary and relevant as ever (witness the recent hit revivals on Broadway and the West End). It features a brilliant energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim's best-known songs (including "Another Hundred People," "The Ladies Who Lunch" and "Being Alive").

He is purchased by Potiphar where thwarting advances from Potiphar's wife lands him in jail. When news of Joseph's gift to interpret dreams reaches the Pharaoh (wryly and riotously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize. After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel.
