Broadway's legendary musical has been specially adapted to meet the
needs of young performers. This author-approved edition has been
abridged to a running time of just over two hours, while carefully
maintaining the integrity of one the greatest musicals ever written. This
epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century
France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean
Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes and
honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive
father - violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector
Javert, who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently
pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a
bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in
love with Valjean's adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel
fully redeemed.Originally adapted from Victor Hugo's timeless novel, LES MISÉRABLES SCHOOL EDITION introduces a new generation to the grand and inspirational story that has touched the hearts of millions. For, within LES MISÉRABLES SCHOOL EDITION
lies the universal truth "To love another person is to see the face of
God"? and this message is sure to have a lasting impact on your cast,
crew, audience, and school alike.

A true musical theatre phenomenon, JEKYLL & HYDE attracted legions of loyal fans even before the show began its smash-hit Broadway run. An evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, JEKYLL & HYDE is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of Man's evil nature from his good, Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde. This gothic musical is the perfect opportunity for your male and female stars to showcase their abilities. The show offers great flexibility for cast size and use of ensemble and its powerful rock score will require strong, versatile singers.

Based on Louisa May Alcott's own family experiences (and novel), LITTLE WOMEN,
follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up
in Civil War America. The beloved story of the March sisters is timeless
and deals with issues as relevant today as when they were written. Now,
this wonderful narrative has been brought to life as an exhilarating
new musical filled with glorious music, dancing and heart. LITTLE WOMEN embodies
the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with

BWW Reviews: You're in Good Company with URINETOWN at Hale Center Theater Orem

"I run the only toilet in this part of town," the heartless latrine manager sings out. "You come here and pay a fee, for the privilege ... to pee."

Hale Center Theater Orem's hysterical Urinetown is a privilege ... to see.

Stellar direction by the richly inventive Dave Tinney and zesty performances make the show bladder-bursting bliss. With a whiz of joke after joke, Urinetown is the funniest musical in liters of laughs and sparkles as brightly as polished porcelain.

The story centers on the banning of all private toilets following a decades-long drought. What Obamacare will do to medical care, the monopolistic Urine Good Company has done to public amenities.

Urinal fee hikes are enacted by the dastardly mega-corporation CEO, Caldwell B. Cladwell (Chris H. Brower). When Caldwell's starry-eyed daughter Hope (Kelly Coombs Johnson) falls in love with revolutionary Bobby Strong (Chase Ramsey), the stage is set for a showdown between the oppressed poor and the corporate goons.

The appealing Johnson and the zippy Ramsey display vocal prowess and fine comic acting skills. They are bundle of droll enthusiasm in "Follow Your Heart." Taylor Eliason also makes a strong impression as Officer Lockstock, the narrator. His wisecracks and amusing asides are designed to keep things light, with his frequent companion Officer Barrel (Andrew Robertson) capably assisting him.

Cladwell is played with superb comic villainy by Brower, who is horrifyingly funny in "Don't Be the Bunny," about the importance of staying on the top of the capitalist food chain. Amber Dodge as Little Sally deadpans some of the show's most hilarious lines.

The witty and authoritative delivery of "It's a Privilege to Pee" reminds why Marcie Jacobsen is excellent in every role. Daniel Fenton Anderson is all befuddled amusement as Senator Fipp.

The supporting cast is a golden shower of bubbly talent, especially in the Act 2 showstopper, "Run, Freedom, Run!" Each ensemble member is in on the zesty humor.

Bobby Swenson's rusting, post-industrial stage design works hand in glove with Maryann Hill's dazzlingly drab Depression-meets-steampunk costumes.

Urinetown is charmingly audacious, preposterously wacky, and wet-your-pants funny.

BWW Blog: Kelly McCormick of PTC's LES MISERABLES - Great Junk Food!

When people ask me why I love Salt Lake City as much as I do, I usually reply, "Amazing outdoor life, a thriving creative community, and great junk food." Emphasis on the latter. For the record, I am not including in this category all of the amazing home-baked goodies that our very own Mary Driggs brings in on what seems like a weekly basis (and thank goodness for the hiking in the Wasatch Mountains to burn off all those cupcakes!). Only here have I had things like deep-fried scones (!), HawaiIan Haystack, Apple Beer, and Hires Big H. If you grew up in the Midwest, like I did, you probably know Hires Root Beer - it was my favorite pop (Yes, that's what we called it. Laugh away), available at any grocery store. How thrilling to know that their flagship restaurant, an old-fashioned burger joint where everything is made from scratch daily, is right here in Utah!

A few evenings ago, after a show, a bunch of PTC Les Mizzers went down to Hires for some late-night burgers and fries . . . and ended up running into Bryn Terfel! You know, as you do. He was there with his rep from Deutsche Grammophone and the President of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Clearly, someone had gotten the memo about SLC's great junk food.

It turns out that Mr Terfel was in town to record a new album with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (or "MoTab," as it's called by the locals). He would also be singing three songs from this album during the special Mother's Day live broadcast of "Music and the Spoken Word," the world's longest continuing network broadcast (the first was in 1929!). Bryn (since we're on a first-name basis now) and his entourage asked if we'd like to be their special guests for the Sunday program. Of course the answer was a resounding, "YES!"

We arrived at 8:45 Sunday morning to find that three pews had been reserved for our group. Before the broadcast began, we, among other special guests, were announced and asked to stand and be recognized by the audience. As a side note, Mitt Romney, who was there and had been schmoozing before the concert began, wasn't asked to stand and be recognized! Now who's fancy? We settled in for a half-hour of inspirational music, beautifully sung and spectacularly produced. After we were off the air, Bryn was asked to turn and face the choir as they sung their traditional closing song, "God Be With You 'Til We Meet Again." What an incredibly moving end to the morning - we were all misty-eyed.

So I guess my list of favorite things about Salt Lake needs revision: add to it "celebrity sightings." Wishing you all a week full of music, inspiration and great junk food!

DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS has been described as stylish, sexy, irreverent, and "Broadway musical comedy heaven."Based on the popular 1988 film, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS centers on two con men living on the French Riviera. Lawrence Jameson makes his lavish living by talking rich ladies out of their money. Freddy Benson more humbly swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target, heiress Christine Colgate, wins and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS gives directors the wonderful opportunity to direct two leading men with a large ensemble. It's a great choice for community theaters looking to add some spice to their season!

Bursting with the rambunctious energy of the original film, SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS is all boisterous fun and romance that harkens back to the glory days of the movie musical.SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS is a glorious romp suitable for middle school, high school, and community theatre productions. A true musical theatre phenomenon, JEKYLL & HYDE attracted legions of loyal fans even before the show began its smash-hit Broadway run.

WHAT THE BELLHOP SAW to Be Staged by Utah Repertory Theater, 5/31-6/15

Utah Repertory Theater Company announces its production of the hysterical farce WHAT THE BELLHOP SAW -- the funniest show you've never seen.

Billed as "a riotously entertaining, splendidly silly, laugh-out-loud slapstick farce," WHAT THE BELLHOP SAW will be staged May 31-June 15 at The Historic Murray Theater, with performances Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and matinee at 2 p.m. on June 15.

"WHAT THE BELLHOP SAW was written for pure enjoyment," says director Chase Ramsey. "Some of the themes expressed are semi-political -- making it, at moments, a satire. But in truth, the reason BELLHOP has to be seen is because you will laugh until you're sore. It is a show that will 'help you escape from the dreary horrors of the real world.' "

"The laughs keep on coming!," wrote a reviewer of the original New York production, and Broadway Stage magazine called the show "A rip-roaring good time!" Playwrights Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore also wrote the popular comedy "Love, Sex, and the I.R.S."

"In a farce, it is the cast that makes or breaks the show," Ramsey explains. "This cast has been complimented by many as one of the best casts they have ever seen in local theater."

Leading the cast as Wally the Bellhop is Jack Kyle Oram, an actor with Grassroots Shakespeare Company. He was recently seen as Koko in The Mikado and as Orpheus in Eurydice.

As the hapless guest Georgie who checks into Hotel Titlmore is James McKinney, who recently played the lead role of Vincent in a nationally honored production of Vincent in Brixton.

Reviewed as one of the finest comic actors in Utah, Jake Ben Suazo will cross-dress in the role of Arlene, Georgie's jealous wife, which will add to the show's hilarity. Suazo is co-creator of Thrillionaires Improv Theater and was last seen in The 39 Steps.

The other cast members are Aubrey Bench (Little Heidi), Maddy Belle Forsyth (Heather), M. Chase Grant (Hotel Guest), Benjamin James Henderson (Stan), Robbie X Pierce (Babu the Terrorist), Jason Sullivan (Roger), Bethany R. Woodruff (Missy), and Daniel Whiting (Missy).

"Look forward to some brilliant performances," Ramsey promises. "This cast is incredible."

Synopsis: WHAT THE BELLHOP SAW tells the story of Georgie, a mild-mannered accountant, who uses the connections of his bellboy brother to secure a room in a posh New York hotel where he intends to seduce Heather, his shapely secretary, who is unaware of his impending advances. When a fugitive author with a price on his head takes up residence in the same room, shadowed by a CIA agent, things begin to get out of hand. Throw in Georgie's jealous wife, Arlene, who resembles Rosie O'Donnell, and a terrorist -- and the pot really begins to boil, all stirred up by these colorful characters who include an oversexed hotel maid.

Advance tickets are $18-$15 and can be purchased at UtahRep.org/Tickets. The price of tickets at the door is $20-$17.

WHAT THE BELLHOP SAW is the third production of the burgeoning Utah Repertory Theater Company, after the Utah premieres of two musicals, Side Show and I Love You Because.

You see, it had been a longtime wish for me to donate as much hair as possible to Locks of Love, a non-profit that provides prosthetic hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children (up to age 21) who suffer from medical hair loss. I was one of those kids: when I was twelve, my hair suddenly began to fall out in large chunks. I had a bald spot on the crown of my head about four inches in diameter, and other quarter-size spots scattered around. I was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata - a condition with no known causes or cures. My doctor went out on a limb and gave me a shot to the scalp of something experimental, and, luckily, it worked. After a few months, my hair began to grow back. Most people that suffer from Alopecia Areata are not so fortunate, and the sense of shame that I felt at my appearance (during puberty, no less) during those months will always stay with me. As a grateful adult with a fully-restored head of hair, it meant a lot to me to be able to help a child in a similar situation.

So after returning to NYC, I found a salon in Astoria that participated in the program and made an appointment. I was brimming with excitement - not only was I about to get a fantastic new haircut (which was SO overdue), someone else's life might change dramatically from this seemingly small act. I couldn't wait to sit in the stylist's chair and get that cape on, already! We discussed what the "after" look should be, and then my hair was divided up into 5 ponytails 18 inches in length. My stylist took out her scissors, smiled and asked, "Ready?" "Yes!" I declared . . . and then the first ponytail was cut off. Instantly, tears sprung to my eyes. "Are you okay?" my stylist asked. "Yes, yes . . . I want to do this!" I sobbed. And off it all came. I walked out of the salon feeling 10 pounds lighter, literally, and pondering why I had such a visceral reaction to a) such a simple thing as a haircut; and b) why I was crying when I had wanted to do this for so long!

You might be wondering why this is the topic of my blog this week . . . and I'll tell you: it's because eight times a week, as Fantine, my hair is cut off on stage. ON STAGE. IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE. (Side note for those of you who are not Sherlock Holmes: it's a wig. Yes, I have been asked in earnest if my ACTUAL hair is cut every show). In the original production, Fantine was swept offstage by the Hair Hag and had four seconds to do a wig change; in our PTC production, the brilliant Amanda French has engineered a wig that is able to be "cut" every show. The first time I heard how she had accomplished this design, my jaw was on the floor. Six years later, I'm still in awe of her creativity and astounded at what it gives me, Kelly the actor, emotionally in every show. I asked Amanda if she'd allow me to divulge a little bit of what makes the wig work, without giving away all of the magic trick. Generously, she said, "Sure!" So here it is, folks - magnets. Something so simple that creates theatrical magic and changes my show dramatically, in every sense of that word.

I'll leave you with a few images of Amanda and all of the beautiful work she does to make Les Mis leap off the page. Enjoy!

BWW Reviews: Pioneer Theatre Company's LES MISERABLES is Impressive

The Utah favorite Les Miserables has once again been impressively mounted at Pioneer Theatre Company (following the record-breaking first regional premiere in 2007).

Les Miserables (a musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer) is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. It is the epic story of Jean Valjean, who spends his life running from the law because he stole a loaf of bread to save his family, and those he comes in contact with, including the students involved in the Paris Uprising of 1832. It is a powerful, classic tale of love, strength, and redemption told through beautiful music that is now iconic in its own right.

During the final moments of this production, Eponine (Manna Nichols) and Fantine (Kelly McCormick), who have appeared as spirits to a dying Valjean, change their focus to those who they loved most in the world. Eponine gazes longingly at her lost love, Marius, and Fantine is filled with pride at the sight of her beloved daughter, Cosette, grown and married. Ingeniously reinvented, beautifully staged moments such as this one are scattered throughout the show. It is unfortunate that more of the scenes and musical moments are not reimagined in this way. Instead, the tried and true is mostly relied on. This creates the comfort of familiarity, which is laudable in its own right, if not as thrilling as a reinterpretation would be.

Director Charles Morey and choreographer Karen Azenberg (the recent and current artistic directors of the theatre, respectively) are to be commended for the sheer magnitude of the production they have mounted. The large number of actors/singers in the cast (all impressive in their performances), the difficulty of the material, and the large-scale production are all reasons that this accomplishment shouldn't be taken for granted.

Joe Cassidy as Valjean and Josh Davis as Javert head up an impressive leading cast. Both have incredible voices and wonderfully communicate their characters' motivations.

Dale Hensley as Thénardier and Christianne Tisdale as his wife are both very strong performers, always offering up their comic relief with strong vocals and a dash of irony.

Other standouts include Perry Sherman as Marius, Kevin Vortmann as Enjolras, and Manna Nichols as Eponine.

Costume designer K.L. Alberts, along with hair and makeup designer Amanda French, has created an idyllic, painterly period setting while still communicating the poverty of many of the characters. Scenic designer George Maxwell has done a lovely job of incorporating the traditional turntable of the original staging within a historic world of stone and shutters. Karl E. Haas' lighting complements the rest of the production design while enhancing the mood of each scene.

This production is one that fans of Les Miserables, and especially of its original staging, will love.

Les Miserables plays through June 1, 2013.
Utah Shakespeare Festival Announces Upcoming Season

The Utah Shakespeare Festival recently revealed its 2014 season, eight plays running from June 23 to October 18. Artistic Directors David Ivers and Brian Vaughn announced the season, which includes four plays ranging from Shakespeare classics to a Stephen Sondheim musical to a world premier adaptation of a beloved novel.

Tickets for the 2014 season go on sale June 24, 2013. They are available via the Festival website, www.bard.org; telephone, 800-PLAYTIX; or at the Ticket Offices at the Adams Shakespearean and Randall L. Jones theatres.

The Adams Shakespearean Theatre will feature three plays by William Shakespeare, playing from June 23 to August 30. First is the Festival's continuation of its History Cycle with the third play in Shakespeare's theatrical chronicle of England and its kings: Henry IV Part One. This follows the first two in the series produced in 2013: King John and Richard II. The History Cycle will continue chronologically through all ten plays in future years.

Also in the Adams Theatre will be two more Shakespeare plays (Measure for Measure and The Comedy of Errors) which are part of the Festival's ambitious Complete the Canon Project, an ongoing initiative to produce all of Shakespeare's thirty-seven plays between 2012 and 2023.

In the Randall L. Jones Theatre will be a new adaption of Jane Austin's Sense and Sensibility, commissioned by and premiering at the Festival and written by Joseph Hanreddy and J. R. Sullivan, and Stephen Sondheim's brilliant fairytale-inspired musical, Into the Woods. These two shows will run from June 23 to August 30.

In addition, the Randall Theatre will host a fourth Shakespeare play, also part of the Complete the Canon Project: Twelfth Night. One of Shakespeare's most popular comedies, Twelfth Night will play throughout the Festival season, from June 23 to October 18. Rounding out the late end of the season will be playwright Steven Dietz's Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, a mystery adventure about the world's most popular detective, and Boeing-Boeing a high-flying farce by French playwright, Marc Camoletti. Both will play from September 20 to October 18.

"I think 2014 embodies the perfect balance of progressive programming for the Utah Shakespeare Festival," said Artistic Director David Ivers. "Most importantly, by producing four of Shakespeare's plays we further deepen our connection to our namesake playwright. I'm particularly excited that Twelfth Night will have such a long run in the Randall, allowing Shakespeare to be exposed to our loyal guests and new students across many regions."
