Frist Fridays Concert Series Kicks Off with Malemen, 6/28

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts' popular summer concert series Frist Fridays kicks off Friday, June 28 with a performance by the Chattanooga-based band The MaleMen. Now in its eleventh season, Frist Fridays take place on the final Friday of June, July and August from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m in the Center's Turner Courtyard. Patrons are invited to enjoy an evening of live music, light snacks and beverages as well as the diverse exhibitions on view in the Frist Center's galleries. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the events. Frist Fridays take place rain or shine.

"Frist Fridays have become one of Nashville's most popular summer traditions, attracting visitors of all ages from Middle Tennessee and beyond," said Susan H. Edwards, Ph. D., executive director of the Frist Center. "It is pleasure to bring music and art together in such a dynamic way within our creative community. This year's series is heavily influenced by Sensuous Steel: Art Deco Automobiles, our major summer exhibition. We are so pleased to have these wonderful entertainers jump into the spirit of the exhibition!" Dr. Edwards concluded.

June 28, 2013 The MaleMen Show Band

A versatile musical ensemble based out of Chattanooga, Tenn.,The MaleMen Show Band features three female vocalists and a seven-member rhythmic horn section. Their music selection ranges from the 1960s to contemporary hit songs; whether it's rhythm and blues, Top 40 hits, reggae or rock and roll, this live band can do it all. On this evening, The MaleMen will perform Motown sounds of Detroit, bringing Motor City to Music City!

July 26, 2013 The Long Players

The Long Players are a group of Nashville-based musicians who, since 2004, have taken classic albums and performed them live in their original sequences. The Long Players' unique tribute to "the album" as a conceptual work of art sets them apart from other tribute bands that focus on look-a-likes and sound-a-likes. Through this approach and their remarkable ability to pull off a variety of musical styles, they have received national notoriety and have been featured in Billboard and on NPR. The band includes Bill Lloyd (Foster & Lloyd), Steve Allen (20/20), Steve Ebe (Human Radio), Brad Jones (record producer) and Jen Gunderman (Jayhawks). Dipping into Nashville's exceptional musical community, The Long Players always offer a stellar roster of guest artists to help them bring these classic albums to life.

For their Frist Friday appearance, The Long Players will perform The Cars' platinum debut album in concurrence with Sensuous Steel.

August 30, 2013 DRIVIN' 'N CRYIN'

DRIVIN' 'N CRYIN' is an American southern rock band based out of Atlanta. This musical group mediates between heavy metal and country music as they keep to southern lyrics with a hard rock tempo. Their songs "Scarred but Smarter" (1986) and "Whisper Tames the Lion" (2007) were rated as top college radio songs after their release. Their massive rock radio hit "Fly Me Courageous" was based on a true story of Navy pilots who listened to music in their cockpits as they bombed Baghdad during Operation Desert Storm. DRIVIN' 'N CRYIN' was featured in a documentary film directed by Eric Von Haessler entitled "Scarred but Smarter: (life n times of drivin n cryin)" tracing the ups and downs of the band's 28-year career and narrating the life of a rock band in a 20th century setting.

Admission

Admission to each Frist Fridays concert is free for Frist Center members and to visitors 18 years and younger. General adult admission for non-members is $10.00 and $7.00 for seniors, military and college students with ID.

Frist Fridays feature a special selection of economically-priced snack food items in the Frist Center Café. The selections will vary for each event and will include such items as chicken wings, sliders, corn dogs and soft pretzels and will range in price from $2.50 to $4.50.

Street Theatre Company's ClassAct Dramatics will be hosting their FREE Annual Ice Cream Social today, June 15th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Street Theatre Company, 1933 Elm Hill Pike, Nashville TN 37210.

Ice Cream is generously being donated. This is a fun and free social event for all ages to learn more about Street Theatre Company's ClassAct Dramatics Youth Programs. There will performances from the cast of Really Rosie, the Teen Improv Troupe, and more. Plus, there will be some interactive improv games, as well! So come, hang out, meet some of our teachers and staff, and have some delicious ice cream to celebrate the beginning of summer!

Street Theatre Company Stages THE COLORED MUSEUM, Now thru 6/30

George C.Wolfe's THE COLORED MUSEUM is a satirical play that gives new meaning and perspective on being black in contemporary America. The play consists of eleven "exhibits" that re-explore and undermine stereotypes of what it means to be black. The play tackles issues such as oppression, stereotypes, and self-identity with a satirical twist, and examines the strong desire and struggle for African Americans to release centuries of oppression.

Although the play is generally light-hearted and farcical, and contains a great deal of jazz-and-blues influenced music and a spattering of dance, its underlying themes are intended as a valuable reminder of the struggle for equality and recognition that African-Americans have experienced throughout their history. Director Jon Royal says, "Wolfe has created a museum filled with pieces that trace the African American experience from slavery into the twentieth century. Like many things that find themselves in museums, these exhibits have become somewhat distorted, and distanced from their origins."

THE COLORED MUSEUM is directed by Jon Royal, with musical direction by Rollie Mains and choreography by Nomalanga Eniafe. The cast features a cast of thirteen actors including Shawn Whitsell, Tamiko Robinson, Lauren Jones, Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva, and many more talents from the Nashville area. Street Theatre Company is supported by Metro Nashville Arts Commission and Tennessee Arts Commission.

THE COLORED MUSEUM runs tonight, June 14 through 30. Tickets are $18 for adults and $16 for students and seniors, and group rates are available. One night only, from Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Second City, acclaimed musicians & improvisers Laura and Rick Hall are joining the Nashville Improv Company to present a night of musical comedy, completely improvised.

A rare opportunity for fans of Whose Line is it Anyway?, which returns this July, this is going to be the improv event of the summer.

This performance will be at The High Watt (Cannery Row/Mercy Lounge Complex) featuring a full bar and stage. While this is a PG-13 show, the High Watt is an 18+ venue.

THE LION KING Sells Out 4-Week Nashville National Tour Stop

Disney's THE LION KING celebrated its second sold-out engagement in Nashville, which concluded on Sunday, June 2 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The triumphant four-week return grossed over $5.3 million at the box office and entertained more than 73,000 patrons during 32 performances. The show's six-week premiere engagement in 2006 played a sold-out run at TPAC.

It is estimated that the Nashville engagement of THE LION KING generated an $18.5 million economic benefit to the city from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff. This figure is based upon a Touring Broadway League report which found that, on average, Broadway tours contribute an economic impact 3.5 times the gross ticket sales to the local metropolitan area's economy.

"Everyone has been roaring with excitement throughout THE LION KING's four-week run, and the response we've seen from both audiences and the community has been overwhelming," said Kathleen O'Brien, TPAC president and chief executive officer. The North American touring production of THE LION KING has been seen by more than 15 million theatergoers and grossed over $983 million to date. After 11 years on the road, THE LION KING continues to celebrate unparalleled achievements and delight new audiences throughout North America. The current schedule is listed below.

In its 16th year, THE LION KING remains ascendant; it is the highest-grossing Broadway show in New York history and one of the most popular stage musicals in the world. Since its Broadway premiere on November 13, 1997, 21 global productions have been seen by more than 70 million people and, cumulatively, run a staggering 96 years. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), THE LION KING is only the second show in history to generate five productions worldwide running 10 or more years. THE LION KING won six 1998 Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Scenic Design (Richard Hudson), Best Costume Design (Julie Taymor), Best Lighting Design (Donald Holder), Best Choreography (Garth Fagan) and Best Direction of a Musical. The first woman to win a Tony Award for Direction of a Musical, Taymor has in recent years supervised new productions of the show in Las Vegas, Madrid and the UK tour and just completed casting the Brazilian production in Sao Paolo.

The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice's music from The Lion King animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice; additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer; and music from "Rhythm of the Pride Lands," an album inspired by the original music in the film, written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer. The resulting sound of THE LION KING is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, ranging from the Academy Award-winning song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" to the haunting ballad "Shadowland."

The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed The Lion King animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the film's screenplay. Other members of the creative team include: Michael Curry, who designed the masks and puppets with Taymor, Steve Canyon Kennedy (sound design), Michael Ward (hair and makeup design), John Stefaniuk (associate director), Marey Griffith (associate choreographer), Clement Ishmael (music supervisor) and Doc Zorthian (production supervisor). Set in an island paradise during World War II, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French planter, Emile. Nellie learns that the mother of his children was an island native and, unable to turn her back on the prejudices with which she was raised, refuses Emile's proposal of marriage. Meanwhile, the strapping Lt. Joe Cable denies himself the fulfillment of a future with an innocent Tonkinese girl with whom he's fallen in love out of the same fears that haunt Nellie. When Emile is recruited to accompany Joe on a dangerous mission that claims Joe's life, Nellie realizes that life is too short not to seize her own chance for happiness, thus confronting and conquering her prejudices.Music by Rodgers, Richard; Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II; Book by Oscar Hammerstein II & Joshua Logan; Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize winning novel
