Lighthouse Youth Theatre's Protégé Troupe Presents CHILDREN OF EDEN.

Freely based on the story of Genesis, CHILDREN OF EDEN is a frank, heartfelt and often humorous examination of the age-old conflict between parents and children. Westchester Broadway Theatre Opens THE SOUND OF MUSIC, 6/20

One of the world's best loved musicals, based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp; The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Maria is a young, aspiring but quirky, nun whose love of freedom makes it obvious to her superiors that she is not suited for religious life. Thus, she is sent off to be the governess to Captain von Trapp's seven troublesome children. Unlike previous governess', Maria becomes friends with the children due to their mutual love of music. She fills the lives of the Von Trapp children with "The Sound of Music" and captures the heart of their stern and lonely father. But, will their harmonious lives be torn apart when their beautiful homeland is ravaged by war? Rodgers and Hammerstein's Tony Award-winning musical delights audiences with the uplifting story and an irresistible score: "Climb Every Mountain," "Do-Re-Mi," "Edelweiss" and "My Favorite Things."

The Sound of Music opened on Broadway on November 16, 1959 and closed on June 15, 1963 after 1,443 performances. It was directed by Vincent J. Donehue, and choreographed by Joe Layton. The original cast starred Mary Martin as Maria,Theodore Bikel as Captain Georg von Trapp and Patricia Neway as Mother Abbess. The show tied for the Tony Award for Best Musical with Fiorello! Other awards included Martin for Best Actress in a Musical, Neway for Best Featured Actress, Best Scenic Design (Oliver Smith) and Best Musical Direction (Frederick Dvonch).

The show has enjoyed numerous productions and revivals since then. It was adapted as a 1965 film musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, which won five Academy Awards

BWW Interviews: Robert Klein Talks Career at the White Plains Performing Arts Center

The White Plains Performing Arts Center (WPPAC) has announced that Robert Klein with musical director Bob Stein will present an evening of comedy, theatre and song to benefit the White Plains theatre on Saturday, June 1st at 8:00 pm. Mr. Klein took time to discuss his career with Broadway World.

BWW: It is wonderful to talk to you about your "forty-plus year" career. A true New Yorker who (if I believe everything I read) had no designs on entertainment at first. Was comedy in your blood as a child or was it something you pursued as you got older?

Robert Klein: You read correctly. I was going to go into the medical field, though I was always the class clown. It was my father that was the hilarious one. A textile salesman in the garment district, he was truly gifted. Comedy was just a way of life in our house.

BWW: I know you worked with the iconic troupe, Second City but what were some of your comic inspirations?

Klein: 1965 at Second City was the most wonderful thing that could have happened to me and when I feel it "all began". I had spent a year at the Yale Drama School, but was already pulled towards comedy. Jonathan Winters, Lenny Bruce. It was Lenny that taught me comedy could be meaningful and be used as a social critic.

I got my first Broadway show doing THE APPLE TREE, but continued to do comedy work on the side and meet Richard Pryor, Bette Midler and so many others during that time. I knew the world was full of funny people, but to decide to make it a profession was a completely different thing.

BWW: And for comedy in the 70s, we must not forget Saturday Night Live.

Klein: Yes. I was the original customer in the Cheeseburger, no Coke - Pepsi skit. Along with Jane Curtain and Gilda Radner.

BWW: What made you decide to record your first comedy album in 1973? (Which for readers to know, you were nominated for two Grammy's for "Best Comedy Album of the Year".)

Klein: It was the thing to do then. Lily Tomlin, Bill Cosby, George Carlin - they were all doing it. And I had so much material after the first that I continued creating albums.

BWW: And then to have the very first HBO stand-up comedy special. What was the unchartered territory like?

Klein: HBO came to me to do it. At the time, they only had half a million subscribers (and I take full credit for what they've grown into). The NY Times saw the importance of the comedy special when they reviewed it. There was nothing like it at the time. A comedian could have six minutes on The Tonight Show or a small set in a club somewhere, but to have a full special air was a big deal. My first eight shows are all in a box set now on DVD and the first few were only really seen by those few early subscribers to the station.

BWW: I listened to you many times, as a favorite audition song of mine was from THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG which you did in 1979 (and was Tony nominated). You worked with one of the absolute finest in the business with the late Marvin Hamlisch. Can you share any stories from that period with us?

Klein: Neil Simon was planning on turning his play THE GINGERBREAD LADY into a musical and was working with Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer-Sager when he decided they should just do a musical based on their lives instead. And that's who I was basically playing in the musical. (Marvin was thrilled that I was playing him, BTW, as I was very good looking.) Marvin was a joyful collaborator. A wonderful man. My co-star from THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG, Lucie Arnaz and I continued to do many concerts with Marvin for years. The last was in Pasadena about four weeks before he passed and he never said a word about how he was feeling.

BWW: You took your stand-up to Broadway in the 80s where you could play "yourself". When creating that show, did you approach it differently because it was on Broadway?

Klein: I love live theater, but I also hate the thought of doing the same thing over and over. And two of my Broadway shows I stayed with for a year each.

BWW: Your Obie and the Outer Critics Circle Award winning performance in Wendy Wasserstein's, THE SISTERS ROSENWEIG...

Klein: Yes. But with my own shows I get the joy of live theater and can still change it up nightly. You can't change Neil Simon's lines when doing a play. So for my own Broadway show, that's what I did. I was doing that show at Circle in the Square on the set of the play COASTAL DISTURBANCES so I would make jokes about the beach and my surroundings. It sold out. They wanted to run longer, but another show was coming in the space and I already had other jobs lined up as well.

Now I will do a staged reading of something like THE EXONERATED which I did with the wonderful Lynn Redgrave and Montel Williams or other live experiences that do not require more than two weeks. (Plus many are for good causes.)

BWW: You have done so many films throughout your career from The Owl and the Pussycat to Primary Colors to Two Weeks Notice. As well as numerous television shows. For those young actors reading this just starting in the business, what advice would you give?

Klein: I've done over 40 feature films and they are really fun and interesting, but completely different techniques. Lee Grant told me on one of my first films, "You're not on stage. The camera does all the work." I was told to calm down and relax. For advice I would say if you are crazy about your profession, find the right niche for you. I was spoiled that by 23 years old my career took off and I could keep doing it. Pursue until proven otherwise. For theater: be in New York. For film and TV, go to LA. But if you start at 20 and you are 45 and noticing no one is hiring you, it might be time to stop.

BWW: When I first moved to New York City in the late 80s, you had your nighttime talk show Robert KleinTime. Do you see a major difference in the landscape of television over the past 20 years since that show aired?

Klein: So much has changed through the years. Comedy is now a complete industry unlike when I started. Lenny Bruce was charged for violating obscenity laws which comics do not have to think about today. I believe foul language is beneficial if used aptly: not as a substitute for wit.

With the talk show, the USA Network was a new cable channel and we only did one a week. We could make each one shine because we weren't trying to do something nightly. I was a cable pioneer. Even interviewed Bill Maher and Jeaneane Garofalo on the E! Network when it started out. But so much has changed where now networks have large corporations behind them that can even finance feature films. A different world.

BWW: As an author, I'd be remise if I didn't mention your book from 2005 The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue: A Child of the Fifties Looks Back. Was that completely cathartic for you to sit down and write?

Klein: One of my proudest achievements. It was wonderful to write. A series of stories, so different from my stand-up material. I've gone on to write for other magazines, but at some point I'd like to find the time to write another book.

BWW: What can audiences expect at the benefit event at WPPAC?

Klein: People think it's just a comedy routine, but I do music and other surprises. (Can you believe I've been asked to perform with symphonies? That will shock some people.) For those that haven't ever seen me live, they should come out and see it. They are in for an experience!

BWW: Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me and share some great stories about your wonderful career.

In the opening scene, two Supreme Beings plan the beginning of the world with the relish of two slightly sadistic suburban wives decorating a living room. Once they've decided on the color scheme of the races, a little concerned that white people will feel slighted being such a boring color, they create sex and the sexes. Afraid women will have too many advantages, the Beings decide to make childbirth painful and to give men enormous egos as compensation.The audience is whisked through the outrageous sketches where a dozen, or so, actresses play men and women struggling through the common rituals of modern life. This is a humurous show that pokes fun at women and is also thought provoking. It looks at the human condition from a feminist perspective, It deals with gender issues and women's choices, but this is a man-friendly show. Westchester Broadway Theatre's GUYS & DOLLS Continues Through 6/6

Guys and Dolls, subtitled "A Musical Fable of Broadway" is set in the colorful world of New York City in the mid 20th century. It is considered one of the greatest musicals of all time. Guys and Dolls is populated with gangsters and gamblers, missionary dolls and beautiful showgirls, and has one of the greatest musical scores in the history of American theatre. Including Frank Loesser hits; "Luck Be A Lady", "Guys and Dolls", "If I Were A Bell", and "Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat".

New York is the city that never sleeps. From the news seller to the chorus girl, from the gambler to the missionary- all of them caught up in the teeming vitality of the city streets. Some of the characters Damon Runyon's story include Sergeant Sarah Brown (Courtney Glass), of the Save a Soul Mission, vainly trying to spread the word, and make a difference to the sin and depravity of the streets, full of tipsters, gamblers, and con men. Adelaide (Allie Schauer), the showgirl, desperate to leave behind her seemingly glamorous lifestyle for a white picket fence and roses round the door. Nathan Detroit (Michael Brian Dunn), trying to find yet another new location for his floating dice game, keeping just one short step ahead of the law. And the gamblers themselves, eager for just one more roll, for that winning streak that will keep them ahead of the game. And the coolest high roller of them all, Sky Masterson (Gary Lynch), who would bet on anything that would turn him a profit.

Guys and Dolls was directed by the renowned George S. Kaufman, it opened at the 46th Street Theatre in New York City on November 24th, 1950, and ran for 1,200 performances. The show was instantly considered a classic masterpiece and subtitled "A Musical Fable Broadway." Guys and Dolls has seen numerous revivals on Broadway including shows, in 1965, 1977, 1992, and 2009. The show has won 10 Tony Awards in its history; including Best Musical and Best Director.

The Random Farms Kids' Theater hosted its annual Spring Sunset Gala at the Ritz Carlton Hotel's Restaurant 42 in White Plains on Friday, April 19. Approximately 75 parents and friends of Random Farms Kids Theater joined producer Anya Wallach, as well as the theater's directors and creative staff for an evening of cocktails, cuisine, a silent auction and fundraising raffle. "We are so pleased with the turnout and are very grateful for our donors' support. The gala not only raises funds for scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year, but it also provides an opportunity for our parents to get to know each other outside of the hurried carpool routine, picking up and dropping off at rehearsals in our Elmsford studio or performances at the Tarrytown Music Hall. I especially want to thank our director Alexis Grausz for coordinating the event, as well as our gala committee who worked so hard to make the evening a success," said producer Anya Wallach.

Keynote speakers included Jasmine and Rebecca Canziani, both 18. They are twins from Chappaqua who are graduating from Random Farms' Mainstage programs with plans to major in theater arts in college.

Miguel Garcia, 15, of Ossining spoke about his experiences performing in Random Farms shows, which were made possible with the help of tuition scholarships.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of this year's winner of of the Alanna Calder Memorial Scholarship. Alanna Calder, a Scarsdale resident, passed away in 2009 at the age of 12 after a battle with leukemia. She was an avid participant in Random Farms' productions. The scholarship, which was founded in her memory, honors a student whose passion for theater arts and generosity of spirit is reminiscent of Calder's enthusiasm and talent.

Felicia Messina, 15, of Pelham was the 2013 recipient of the Alanna Calder Memorial Scholarship. "I am just so honored to be chosen for this," Messina said. "This was a total surprise."

The Tony Nominated and Oliver Award Winning Best Musical BLOOD BROTHERS tells the tragic story of a mother who, unable to support her children, surrenders one of her newborn twins to a childless woman. Unaware that they are brothers, the boys grow up just streets apart in vastly different homes - one wealthy, the other poor. Despite their different upbringings, they become close friends. But when they fall in love with the same girl, their friendship is tested, and their fate sealed.

The musical debuted in 1983, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. The recent West End revival was one of the longest-running musical productions in history; it opened in 1988, and ended its run on October 27, 2012, having played over 10,000 performances.
