AEG Live has announced that the southern gothic, supernatural musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, written by Stephen King, with music by John Mellencamp and T Bone Burnett, has confirmed a tour of 20 American cities throughout the Midwest and Southeast beginning October 10 in Bloomington, IN, and ending November 6 in Grand Rapids, MI. Tickets go on sale today, May 17 at 10am at aeglive.com.

This extraordinary collaboration, 13 years in the making, is a haunting tale of fraternal love, lust, jealousy and revenge, which will be performed by an ensemble cast of 15 actors and a four-piece live band. The album of the musical will be released on June 4 via Hear Music and the Concord Music Group. Complete tour dates are below.

The Ghost Brothers of Darkland County saga began when Mellencamp told King about a cabin on his land inIndiana where two brothers had gotten in a fight over a girl; one brother accidentally killing the other, only to die along with the girl in a car crash a short time later. King came up with an outline for a play in a matter of days. And then off and on, back and forth, they began to develop it into a full-length musical.

The superb blues 'n' roots music of Ghost Brothers reflects the wide range of styles and influences needed for a work that jumps back and forth across decades. Rather than use the songs to propel the play's narrative, as in a conventional musical, Mellencamp chose to make them a way to reveal the emotions and inner workings of the characters.

Set in the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi, the Ghost Brothers' story centers on two sets of brothers: the ghosts of Jack and Andy, dead in an apparent murder/suicide, and their nephews, the living Frank and Drake, who seem to be headed toward the same downward spiral as their uncles. Joe, younger brother of Jack and Andy, father of Frank and Drake, has decided it's time to reveal his own terrible secret at the site of the tragedy, before it's too late.

As the story emerged during the writing of the musical, it became clear to the collaborators that Ghost Brothers had taken them into unfamiliar territory - and they liked it that way. "John can make rock & roll records and I can write books for the rest of our lives," says King, "but that's the safe way to do it, and that's no way to live if you want to stay creative. We were willing to be educated, and at our age, that's an accomplishment."

Putting King's words and Mellencamp's songs on the stage is in the skilful hands of acclaimed director Susan Booth, who calls the musical a "a kind of new age travelling Medicine Show." "This is a gothic story-driven rock concert," says Booth. "I want the emphasis to be on this fantastic score and our great singers and how the story advances us from song to song. In most musicals, the songs advance the narrative. With Ghost Brothers, the story will advance the songs."

Louisville Rep Stages GREAT AMERICAN SEX PLAY, Now thru 5/26

Proudly ending its 20th season, Louisville Repertory Company presents the comical, sexy romp Great American Sex Play by Brian Walker. Directed by Gil Reyes, the show will run at the Kentucky Center, tonight, May 16 - 18, 20, 23-25 at 8:00pm and May 26 at 2:00pm.

Six self-described sexual deviants have their own objectives thwarted when the sex study they've agreed to takes a tantalizing turn. As the Institute's nefarious (or potentially altruistic?) plans become clear, the participants will have to use all their skills if they hope to return to the outside world unchanged. Funny, dirty, and definitely not for those who blush easily, Great American Sex Play offers a glimpse at 12 minds and hearts (and bodies) that aren't afraid of taboos.

This second production of a Louisville favorite reunites playwright Brian Walker and director Gil D. Reyes for this Louisville Rep production. LEO called the 2006 Finnigan Productions' premiere production of GASP "a fascinating study of sexual polarity that forces the audience to confront the reasons some folks pigeonhole and fear those who do not share their own sexual orientation, thus preventing them from caring about two-thirds of their fellow humans." KY Center Announces Plans for 'Charter for Compassion'

This month, as the city prepares to welcome the Dalai Lama, several special events will be held to celebrate Louisville's status as a "Compassionate City" and Mayor Greg Fischer's mission to make the city a friendlier, more caring place to live and visit. The Kentucky Center will be participating in, hosting, and supporting many of these events.

The Compassionate Resolution

The Kentucky Center has drafted and approved a resolution to uphold the Charter for Compassion, signifying our commitment to being a compassionate organization via such elements as empowerment, transparency, hospitality and abundance. To ensure this resolution has tangible outcomes at The Center, a staff committee has been formed (named "Centered on Compassion") to identify the compassionate work The Center has already been doing, to monitor the progress of our "compassionate" identity, and brainstorm/execute additional ways in which we can embrace the principles of this resolution.

One Million Bones

On May 20, a version of the Washington, D.C. One Million Bones exhibit will be installed at The Kentucky Center. These bones were created by local community members, school children and participants in The Kentucky Center's ArtsReach program along with artist in residence Aletia Robey as a visible petition against genocide and conflict-related crises. Initially conceived for and soon to be placed on the National Mall, the One Million Bones initiative is designed to raise awareness of the suffering and struggle of people in Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burma and Somalia. Each bone that is created nets one dollar towards reconstruction efforts in war-torn communities around the globe. The exhibit will be installed on the front steps of The Kentucky Center on Monday, May 20, from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. This exhibit will be on display until 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 21.

Youth Engaging Compassion, A Dialogue with the Dalai Lama at The Kentucky Center

On May 21, The Dalai Lama will conduct a dialogue with student youth from across the Commonwealth at The Kentucky Center. These students were asked to describe what compassion means to them and develop questions for the Dalai Lama. During the dialogue, ten questions will be selected from among those submitted, and those that posed these questions will deliver them on stage. The mission of Youth Engaging Compassion (YEC) is to ignite compassion in the hearts of young people by sustaining the unquenchable fire that warms the world and the soul. The program celebrates acts of compassion so that suffering is eased and pain is lessoned on the journey toward a more compassionate world. The Weber Gallery Art Globe

Part of the Weber Gallery's wider Striped Show exhibition, The Kentucky Center's South Lobby will be hosting a floor-to-ceiling, 6-feet tall revolving globe of the earth from May 13-22. The Earth's continents and seas are comprised completely of 1,500 colored canvas stripes painted by children, the Louisville Visual Arts Association (LVAA) Open Door classes, and people with disabilities; after which the stripes are shaped and applied to the globe by Tara Remington of LVAA. The collage of stripes showcases the favorite colors, interests and ideas of its creators. One strip features a pair of hands cradling the Earth. Others display a cross, a Star of David, various music notes, a basketball court, a ladybug, suns and smiling faces-all illustrations of what the artists believed make the world a beautiful place. The Globe will be at the Kentucky Center in conjunction with the Dalai Lama's visit and a special series from the Festival of Faiths, "Sacred Silence: Pathway to Compassion," which will take place May 14-19 at the Galt House Hotel and Actor's Theatre of Louisville. These events will include lessons on and practice of meditation, silence and compassion. Initial support for the exhibition was provided by a $10,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support provided by Louisville Metro Arts and the Council on Development Disabilities.

The Tibetan Freedom Concert

The Tibetan Freedom Concert, taking place at the Brown Theatre on May 21, will feature Kentucky native and popular cellist Ben Sollee alongside other local and Tibetan musicians, including Grammy nominated world music composer and former monk Nawang Khechog. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Drepung Gomang Institute, Louisville's Tibetan Buddhist Center and the host organization of Engaging Compassion and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.
